Gap year is actually a little break from academic maybe for one reason or the other. To some is not planned especially when you live in Nigeria and you have planned all your life from secondary school. Thinking of the University to go to after WAEC and JAMB. hmmm! The Nigerian system of education has a way of helping you to experience Gap year.

I believe also that some people decide to take a break from school so that they can learn one trade or the other. To some it might be as a result of the death of a loved one who was responsible for sponsoring their education. While some people just drop out of school for no reason and even refused to go back later. All I am trying to paint is that Gap year happens for different reasons. It is very difficult to come to a family in Nigeria that has never experienced a gap year for one reason or the other.
When I was going through post this early morning I discovered that this is a national cake for us in Nigeria. You have your life planned out and the country help you to replan it when you grow up. Thanks for her story because it is just a year, but for my first son, he had a whole four years gap.
After graduation from secondary school, we were so hopeful as we expect his WAEC result. When the result finally showed up we learnt that his school had problem with WAEC board and that affected every student who wrote WAEC in that school. All their results for that year was bad and it badly affect them because they can't move forward in their academics without clearing their O level. This was actually a hard one for him that year because all his friends who wrote their Exams in other schools were preparing to move to another level in their education, but he can't go anywhere until that O level is cleared.
It took me days to speak to him so that he can calm down and know what next God has for him. It wasn't easy at all. But finally he was encouraged to prepare for next year with his juniors in school. It happened again that the next result was bad too even yet in another school and I can't blame my boy because I have seen how he can't sleep in the night all in the name reading hard. He made our local Government library his second home at that point, but still he did not make it. The following year he refused to write until the fourth year. This time we decided to register him in a lesson center where he will be prepared again because I believe that he must have forgotten what he read the last two years. Luckily enough for him and everyone in the family who have been praying for him, he passed this time. This four years has not been easy for him because most of his mates who made it to the university the first year were already rounding up their programs almost ready to go for youth service. But he was just about to begin. All glory to God he has gotten admission into the university last year and he is in his second semester as we speak. This is just Nigeria for us.
Finally, I want to admit that it was also for a good reason that he stayed back for this four years. At least we made him achieve alot. He took his time to stay close to his daddy and learn how to edit movie and songs. This is actually helping him alot today because he is into music. He was also introduced to #hive Blockchain and he is doing well today. Because of what he has learnt in the past four years we hardly send him Money in school because he makes his own money and that is alot for us as his parents. We are just more concerned about his younger one who are not financially stable like him. So this is a blessing in disguise. All glory to God.
