During corona time in 2021 my father got sick. He was suffering from high fever few times. We took him to a private hospital at first the doctor could not detect what was the cause they thought it’s a virus fever which will cure very soon. But it was not a virus fever then they started to give the treatment for typhoid and still he did not recover. Then had to admit my father in the hospital for 3 days. But there was no improvement seen while being in the hospital so they took the test for corona and then my mom took the decision that she don’t wanna keep him over here. She want to shift him to the government hospital.
Then I got my father admitted to “Kurmitola Hospital” and at that time the hospital was only specially giving treatments for Corona Virus nothing else. After reaching there they took the admission of my father instantly with free cost. Also they also allowed one attender and the patient has to stay admitted to the hospital and no one can go outside of the hospital due to the risk of spreading corona virus because it was a critical moment that time. I stayed with my father at the hospital and they took us to a big ward and there was left 2 beds and we took the corner where they had window. Then I helped my father to lay down on the bed and tried to arrange something. To be honest I didn’t expect this type of good service from a government hospital. I thought it’s gonna be a headache to admit my father over here but everything went pretty smooth.
Then a ward boy came and gave 2 pairs of pillow, mosquito-curtain & blanket. Then a doctor came and checked my fathers health condition and gave some tests written in a paper. Dr. also mentioned that I must get some medicines immediately. But then they stopped me and said that I didn’t have to go they will manage it. In the noon they came to collect some samples for corona test plus blood test and everything was done on my fathers bed. Normally we have to take the patient out of his bed to the testing room but they didn’t bother to ask for it they just came and did their job over here. Which had impressed me a lot and gave me satisfaction that my father didn’t have to feel more pain.
After that during lunch time they had served the food and after a while they also gave us some snacks to have it later. The food was really good beyond my expectations like it’s healthy and it’s good for the patients well being. Mainly corona makes the immunity system weak so healthy food is a must. In next morning for breakfast they had 2 eggs, 1/2 ltr milk, bread, jam, banana & apple. During lunch time boiled rice, fish curry and for the snacks they had tea, biscuits, milk and oranges.
There was facility for oxygen 24/7 hrs, normally in Bangladesh it’s not available in a government hospital but for the first time I have seen this. They clean the room and the bathroom 2 times in a day. Every time nurse occurs on time and injects medicine moreover, I never had to call any nurse they would just show up when it’s needed. The doctors were always available I could just ask for a doctor anytime. Once my father was facing problem with the oxygen and I didn’t know how to change the normal mask and put the bigger one. There was no nurse available so I had to call the doctor and he taught me how to do it. The doctor visits 2 times in a day and my fathers corona test came negative but the symptoms were similar to corona so they didn’t want to release my father and they had continued his treatment.
In day 5 my father had fully recovered and I was totally impressed by the hospitality for real at this critical situation they have provided a great service and a careful treatment out of expectations. I am very surprised they took care of my father until he fully recovered like they didn’t want release him.
But I also had faced disappointment when in 2023 February my father was in serious condition again with high fever and his condition was worse than in 2021. I had to admit him to “Dhaka Medical Hospital” and it’s known as one of the best government hospitals. They have hired senior doctors from private hospital for better treatments. Any type of treatment is done over here. They had delayed a lot to take the admission of my father. I was crying because my father was in pain his condition was getting worse and I couldn’t tolerate it.
The doctor came on time and checked my father and started the treatment for pneumonia but I was sure my father would never caught pneumonia because he used to stay warmed up all day. My father was feeling better in day 1 but I was very frustrated that one professor dr. came up with his junior doctors and teaching them about the illness of my father and it’s not a bad thing but I didn’t like their way of working. They treat the patients like a lab rat. The patient who is one the bed is a very sick person suffering from pain but the doctors didn’t care they just came up to learn and doing whatever they needed to learn. They don’t even try to understand if the patient is feeling comfortable or not. Once they turned my father from the bed out of nowhere without asking and my father was in pain because of that. Which made me angry but I had to control myself.
As a senior doctor they should be more humble and try to be helpful. Obviously they should teach but I think they should also take permission from the patient or the guardian. Also I know that if they don’t learn how will we get treatment but they must take permissions for that. If they work after taking permission and slowly with the patient then that would be more good and comfortable. I truly didn’t like their behaviour also the nurse was pretty rude to my father and me.
I didn’t like their service at all. Like he was stabbed with injection 3/4 times because she couldn’t find his nerve but my father was mourning in pain and she just made fun of him by saying that “he is a grown up man he should bear it.” It was very disrespectful and I replied to her that “his body is very weak that’s why he is feeling too much pain and you don’t have to laugh about it” and then she started to argue with me later on my father had stopped her by saying “let bygones be bygones.”
Through this picture you can guess how much sick my father was and his weight maybe from 60 to dropped approximately to 37. I was very tensed about my father at that moment. But I am happy that my father has fully recovered now and has gained some weight but not that much.
Both are the hospital of government but there is a huge difference in service. No matter how much the treatment is better but if their behaviour is really bad it can clearly upset a patient. I think “Dhaka Medical Hospital” is not keeping the repute on of being best. Also I want to say that “Kurmitola Hospital” might not be included as the best hospital, not only they had provided the best service but also the behaviour is good. I like the fact they truly cared for the patients and I will forever remember their hospitality.
