Hello everyone, welcome to my blog.
Today, the so-called minimum wage can't even feed my family comfortably for one week if other home materials needed for daily use are added. For God's sake, what can 70k do for a family of 6 in this economy where virtually everything we can lay hands on is quite expensive, down to a cube of maggi.
Some countries take very good care of their civil servants, while some don't. That is why when you visit some countries you will see their civil servants living a very good life with their families and in some other countries, people suffer because they are not paid very well. Some governments don't bother how people survive in their country, whereas those that care make sure that everyone is living a very comfortable life within their country.
Minimum wage, just like the name suggests, is the least that you can be paid as a civil servant in any country. Well, this is so funny because lots of governments don't get to pay their workers the minimum wage that they deserve.
The prices of things don't seek anyone's permission before they increase. Garri, which used to be common man's fast food, is now expensive. The current fuel price is even nothing to write home about, and transportation cost is now above the roof. Even though they said the minimum wage has increased, some people are not even earning half of the current minimum wage, and yet a lot of people look up to them even though things keep rising like a beard that fell inside water.
Some of my country people are very wicked because they will use that opportunity to loot people and triple the prices of things that they grow at the back of their house, and then they blame the government, meanwhile, they are the problem after all. So to me, that looks like going after something that keeps shifting.
I am sure it will take a couple of years before the Nigerian government decides to do another adjustment to the minimum wage, and by then things will no longer be as they are. We can only hope and pray that things are better and the government then will be more considerate and there will be enough to help when that time comes. The fact remains that this minimum wage doesn’t just help those in the public sector, it also helps those in the private sector and forces companies to pay their staff with at least the minimum wage value.
If the minimum wage should be lifted, at least it will reduce some things because currently now people are suffering. Tension everywhere because of family challenges and so many other things.
The country minimum wage is not really helping matters at all, and this is why some individuals are really leaving the country going to another country for a better life. How much minimum wage would really be enough to live a good life in Nigeria? If I was to answer this question late last year, I'd have given a completely different response which would have been more on the negative side of seeing things but a lot has changed since I've been learning and unlearning, here's a thought.
Minimum wage is a very big challenge for so many countries; it has really kept its citizen workers at a low wage rate that affects their daily living, most especially those that have families and those whose parental burdens are on them.
