In this day and age, is it still possible to be unique and stand out? Is it possible to be so outstanding and make such a difference that the entire world would be shaken by what you do? This is no longer like the early days, most of the things that could ever be invented have already been made, and the ones that should be discovered have been discovered as well. What can someone do to stamp their name into the walls of history, sure it will never be blotted out no matter how long?
When you think about it, there is ridiculously little one can do. There is nothing new under the sun, and for every idea you get in your head, you can be rest assured some other people somewhere in the world have thought about it as well and probably brought the idea to life.
Take a look at me for instance, I’m a creative writer, a blogger and also studying to become an electrical engineer. You don’t see such a package on a daily basis, do you? Yet, I can bet you that you will find hundreds of people who are just like me, if not even better. With a simple Google search, you’ll find engineers who are also great romance writers and have a very active social life. Some might even be doing way more than just writing, engineering, and blogging.
This is a scary thought because when you consider it, you have to ask yourself, if not for the money, will I be doing this? Will it be worth it? This will be a tough question to answer because of how saddening it will be. Everyone loves to know that they make an impact, they love to know that their presence would be felt long after they are gone. That is why a lot of us are encouraged to embrace our inner selves and be true to who we are because that is the only time the world can recognize us for who we are. But you might ask yourself, what is the point of being true to yourself if in the end no one will remember you for it?
Now, am I telling you to give up and stop being unique? No. The truth is that as the world evolves, people are finding it easier to get discovered. And to date, one of the surefire ways to do that is to be yourself and to have your own voice. Trying to copy others will just be obvious and even if you manage to pull it off at first, you’ll be unable to keep up the act.
After all, someone decided that he could be a bestselling artist just by becoming an electronic DJ. At the time, there was no one else doing it, but he decided to be different and the world loved him for it.
But then, what if you aren’t so different? What you do so perfectly is the exact thing others do as well, and you guys do it perfectly well. Will this take the shine out of you? No. We all know very well that no matter how identical twins are at birth, there will always be differences to mark them. In the same way, there will always be ways to tell.
The rules remain the same, be true to yourself and be original. That is the problem many of us face today, we try to copy things that have already been done and expect a different result. No one wants a knock-off, they want the original, the real you! And most of the time, that is who they follow. That is what they buy at the supermarket, that is what they listen to when they plug their headphones in. People just want originality.
I know that it can be hard to stay original these days but keep at it. As long as we keep on cultivating our voice and grooming it, we will eventually become known for the very thing we want.
And hopefully, by then life would begin to make more sense.
