Is the era we live in today better than what used to be? What exactly are we enjoying that our ancestors didn’t? Technology? Seriously, is that even a valid point for argument? Because, regardless of how advanced we’ve come in technology, we’re really no better than our forebears. Things are actually even worse.
In the time before money, there was nothing like poverty. Everyone cooked what they could eat and then sold the rest. Everyone had something to offer, and that thing was always in demand. It was impossible to be poor, and very easy to be generous. Is that the same case today? No. Because for some reason, every single innovation of technology, while it takes us a few steps forward, we also take some steps backward as well.
The world is now run by money, and no one cares about quality anymore or even the welfare of their customers. This is because if you get good services, you won’t come back for more. How will you buy a new TV every few years if they make them so good that you never have to change them? New models of the same cars are released every year, how will they make sales if the old cars they made are not spoiling?
There used to be a time when people prided themselves on the impact they had. Companies were happy just doing good even while making money. But not anymore. Because even though the rest of the world is happy with you, as long as you’re not making them more money, then you’re as useless as a used wipe.
In the world of today, the people who grow the fastest are those who know how to take money from others. Anything else, regardless of how good your heart is, you’re simply making noise. That’s the painful truth. But then, what can we do?
But then, were things really better off in the past? The only difference I can say is life expectancy. Then, things could easily kill people; simple illnesses that are nothing today would have killed so many people in the past. And then wars and attacks. But then, have we really evolved from that? The same way people were attacked and killed, the same way one kingdom launched an unprovoked attack on another kingdom, is the same way it’s still happening today.
The same way people made up reasons to kill each other during biblical times is the same way people still kill themselves for the dumbest reasons. No amount of technology can change human nature. This is who we are. Because even if we managed to find a way to predict crime and stop it before it happens, there will still be people who will figure out a way to beat that prediction just to commit a crime. People still steal, lie, betray each other… we’re really cooked as a species! And even worse, every technology that comes out somehow has an adverse effect either on us or on the planet.
From cancer to climate change, brain rot and our increasing lack of ability to stay focused and be creative, accidents and genocide… everything that is happening now is a result of technology. If these things had not been invented, we might not be suffering from them today.
So again, I ask, are we living in a better era? Honestly? The only reason I feel this era is better is that, as I said, life expectancy and health. Because that is the only innovation that doesn’t have an adverse effect on people. Also, the fact that it makes life easier and better for us. But everything else comes with a huge price and risk. Still, in my opinion, this era is better.
I’m just not happy about it.
