Trading your privacy for security is something that’s crazy. Because right now, with the way the world is going, it’s seeming more and more difficult to even get any form of privacy these days. And security is almost non-existent. As in, the more you think about it, the more it seems like nothing seems to be going as it should. Not just in my corner of the world, but on a global scale.
One of the biggest jibes we’ve gotten is the illusion that we actually enjoy privacy. Yeah, while the government might not live with you in your home or monitor you 24/7, you’re still being monitored. You’re captured on CCTV, every purchase you make is studied and analyzed, every penny you make is scrutinized, so that when a ‘suspicious’ money or purchase happens, they’ll be there to swoop in.
Should I talk about satellites? Hell, even your phone is a geolocator, constantly transmitting your location to whoever is interested in looking for you. The only reason many of us believe that we enjoy privacy is simply that we’ve not been an object of a manhunt before. We’ve not seen firsthand the lengths a government will go to spy on someone or track them down.
And now, security. Will the security be absolute? Will they really be fair in providing security for all citizens? Since there will be no privacy, they’ll easily see the people who hate the government or those who didn’t vote for the administration. They’ll know what people talk about in the safety of their homes and bedrooms, and how they complain about the government. Will these guys also be entitled to the same security that people who actually love the government get?
Because no one likes being hated, and as people in power are wont to do, they’ll try to suppress the people they know who hate them and focus more on the ones who do love them. This will show in the distribution of resources because friends and loyalists will get top billing. The haters won’t even get what’s next.
It’s a crazy notion, but it really does make sense. Such a power will be dangerous in the hands of anyone, which is why such kinds of invasive surveillance are illegal. However, if I were to choose my preference, I would pick my privacy. This is because with privacy, you really have no choice. You either have it, or you don’t; there is no two ways about it. With security, you get to choose: you can run, you can hide, you can fight. And if you go down, you will know that it’s not because of something you failed to do.
When you lose privacy, you’re basically helpless, because what if the government were the one you had to protect yourself from? So, every plan you made to get away from them will be used against you. Nah… privacy is better, at least the one we get these days is not so invasive. There is still a breach of privacy, but it’s not too bad, so we can even ignore that it’s there. All good and fine.
Well, I’ve said my bit.
