It’s no news in the world how easy it is today for someone to have their life basically destroyed due to some post they made in the past. Posts from ten years ago when they were young and foolish will be dug up, people will spin fresh perspectives on them, and push their message out into the world with anger and hate. And in the end, what happens? People lose their jobs, celebrities lose endorsements, and some can even lose their source of livelihood. Why? Just because of an opinion they had when they were young and dumb.
And the funny thing is that, for a society that seems to encourage growth, they fail to acknowledge that there was a time before said growth. A time when mistakes were made and a time before the people became the ones that everyone loved and adored so much. And many times, society just conveniently forgets all that, forgets all their accomplishments, and how far they’ve come from the person they used to be, and chucks them into this box where they are only defined by the mistakes of their past.
Yeah, a lot of people have said some really mean things online, and many times, they made downright creepy posts. I know. There are some things that people will post online, and you’d wonder if you are really breathing the same air as these people, or maybe something is mixed in with the oxygen that they breathe. Yeah, I know.
Maybe I could be wrong, maybe people never really change. Maybe such things only happen to people who have a lot to lose, after all, if it won’t cause any scandal, why will people bother to g dig it up? And then, maybe the people who made the terrible posts all those years ago are still the same on the inside. Now that they have so much to lose, they just cover up and pretend, but they still harbor the same sick mentality inside them. Maybe, maybe not…
The truth is, we can never know. We shouldn’t crucify people for opinions they held in the past, and our assumptions that they’re still the same people in the present. Because unless they have kept up that energy and acted that way in the present, we really shouldn’t just assume and choose to forget every other thing that they have done to get to the point that they currently are.
So, what am I trying to say? It’s not fair to punish people for the opinions they held in the past. Society has to learn to give people second chances and also the benefit of the doubt. Because if there is one thing I’ve learned, it is that our true colors always show eventually. In one way or another, everyone will show where they really stand, and if that growth was only an illusion meant to trick people, everyone will know.
But until then, it will hurt no one to just give them the benefit of the doubt.
My 2 cents!
