Well, as a remote worker, my work tool is fairly obvious. I work with a laptop! Most of what I do concerning my job is done on a laptop. While I also make use of my phone, I simply use it for about 10% of the actual job that I do. This is understandable because while phones can basically do everything, it doesn’t mean that they can do everything well or even better. And as a matter of fact, I simply prefer working with a laptop.
Things are easier when you do them with a laptop, compared to a phone. I make my blog posts on my laptop, even though I can easily type and edit my thumbnails on my phone. After all, I started this blog thing with my phone, but the minute I used a laptop, that was it for me. And since then, I do everything I can on a laptop, and the reason is quite clear. I can work for hours on my laptop without getting tired, but with my phone, just thirty minutes in and I’m either distracted, feeling tired, or even sleepy. So, no!
Anyway, what else do I do on my laptop? Besides being a writer, I’m also a Data Analyst, as I’ve said here multiple times. And I use the laptop to work on datasets and also plot my analysis. Can phones do this? Maybe, I don’t know for sure, especially if the phone is powerful enough. But I’ve noticed that phones are only good enough for reading charts and dashboards, not actually creating them. This is because phones will stress you to no end.
Of course, there are things I use my phone to do, but the main crux of my job is done with my laptop. If, for any reason, I’m in a place without my laptop and I have to get work done, I’ll probably be able to do it on my phone. Which is a good thing. But I’ll still try as much as possible to get back to my laptop as soon as I can. Because while the phone is very mobile, the laptop is more efficient. It also gives you a wider screen to work with, so you can see more clearly what you’re dealing with.
Besides a laptop, what are my other work tools? Well, I have an external monitor which works really great for multitasking without having to do those annoying split screens or minimizing and maximizing stuff. I also have an external mouse and keyboard, which makes it even smoother for me. But these are all hardware.
For software, I work with most of the Microsoft Suite, Power BI, MySQL, Capcut, Canva, WriterDuet, and the list goes on. I don’t really have a lot of software on my laptop. I’ve also been careful not to put any files on it because I’m really touchy about my space. I work with some heavy-duty software, and they need space to operate efficiently. Well, so far so good, my laptop has been serving me faithfully, and I’m grateful for that.
It makes my job so much easier and more efficient, and for sure, it gives a lot to look forward to. But no worries, I’m sure things will only get better.
