I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts. Any writer that is worth his onions definitely knows of her and her exceptional works. And most especially I enjoy her In Death series that she writes under the pseudonym of J.D. Robb.
The In Death series is a collection of romantic murder mysteries that are set in the future, somewhere from 2059 and above. And as one would expect, the books are vibrant with the technology of that time. Many of them which are, of course, presently unrealistic. But there is still hope.
One of the gadgets that struck a chord with me is their VR system. That is the Virtual Reality system. In her books, it is so advanced that it does not just use sound and light to fool your brain, but it also makes you experience the feeling of whatever it is you are watching.
Like if you want to relax, and you wear a VR Google, if you want to view yourself under the sun by the beach, you will feel the heat of the sun on your bare skin, even when you are in your room on the bed. If you choose to use it to see a movie, you won’t be watching it as an audience separated by the screen because then it would be as if you were there in the screen with them. If it were an action movie, you would feel all the action and suspense right alongside them.
The features of the VR goggles in the series are a lot. But now, let us leave the world of fiction and come back to our time here in 2022.
Of course, VR is a thing. All of us know that. But it is pretty limited in its features, at least the one that is in mass circulation. Most of the VR is mostly for things like games, they are also used in manufacturing for making complex designs.
But we all know for sure that more will definitely come, as everything gets better and the teeth of technology get sharper the features will increase.
And now that we are having things like Metaverse come up, more and more of our lives will be going digital. Communities are cropping up all over the place in the social space. A time will come when we would not need calls and texts anymore to communicate with people. We would simply travel to their location, via the internet.
There are a lot of possibilities when it comes to what VR can offer, this would be way beyond what we saw in the movie Ready Player One. We would have parties, dates, and conventions all online and without having to leave our homes.
Of course, there will be side effects to this, from constant wearing of the goggles. I know the effects of staring at the computer or phone screen for too long, not to talk of the goggles that will almost have to enter your head, and also block out all the light in the environment as well. But then, as more and more aspects of our lives go online what does that mean for us?
Still, I look forward to a time when we can watch movies without having to hold the phone or sit in front of the TV. Or when you can read an e-book without having to hold your phone, the page would be moving based on the movement of your eyes. It would just be great because it would make life easier for everyone.
But alas, we are not there yet. So we have to keep on waiting until the future gets to us. I know there will be side effects but I hope the manufacturers will put them into consideration. Because with the way I’m seeing it VR has come to stay. And nothing will be kicking it out, so it is up to us to be prepared.
Thank you for reading. Feel free to share your thoughts with me in the comments section, I would love to know. See you in the next post.
