We call it a civilized world but the youth are losing their morals, they are now engaging in so many bad things without fear, crime rate is now rampant, who do we blame? their parent? peer pressure? or lack of contentment?
This is a really nice topic by the hive learners community that is really worth writing about and it seems it is not just in my country that the youth have become fearless when indulging in bad stuffs, it seems it is the same in other countries and those factors i listed up there have a part to play in this!
The number 1 factor on my list is peer pressure!
Gone are the days that your friends will force you to leave the house without your parent permission just to go and play football or games, it is a different scenario now, In a group of ten boys, if four are smokers or likes to drink, you should be certain that sooner the other six would join because they won't want to be left out, now most youth now drinks and do hard drugs, these drugs made them fearless to the extent that they start misbehaving, they turn themselves to tout extorting money from passengers in broad day light and if you don't give them, they will harass you, some even took it far and operate mostly in the night , they waylay people in the dark to steal from them and if you do not cooperate, they will end up hurting you... why are they doing this? it is because they are lazy but still want to enjoy life [ by smoking, drinking and partying] the only easy way out is that method....
Some took to cyber crimes, they pretend to be who they are not online and wait for their victims who they end up collecting a huge amount of money from, it is obvious they are doing it for money but why do they love money and what are they using this money for? most youth are enticed by what their peers are using, when you see your mate using big cars and phones, they feel intimidated without trying to find out if that person is into legal stuff or not, they just want to be like the person and they will end up doing anything just to acquire those things, some even do rituals, the worst of it all!
The second factor is bad parenting!
Some parent are not worth being called parent, your jobless female child will go out and comes back with plenty money, she will offer you some of the money and you will collect it without asking where she got the money, some will even encourage her to go out more, for a male child, a parent will see his son with bad friends, smoking, drinking and all they have to say about it is that he is becoming a man, like for real? what kind of a man will a teenager become when he is into bad vice, at the end, the children lost the respect they have for those parent and end up becoming a problem to the society at large, some parent only knows how to give birth to dozens of children without taking proper care of them, those children end up scattering themselves and become problems to the society because they will do what they need to do to survive without thinking much about the consequence....,
I remember my teenage years, how my mum used to search for me whenever i go out without her permission, she will find me and flog me from there till i reach home and as i grow older and she realized she can't run after me, she stop coming with cane but trust me, she still flogs me every night , she never forget, even if i am asleep, she will wake me up and remind me of my misdeed in the day and flog me to her satisfaction lol, i long for freedom of when i am definitely going to leave the house for her but guess what? i gained my freedom after i finished secondary school but her teachings lived with me, i was very free to do what i like in my new place but then i never did, the freedom i craved for became useless because i would now rather stay at home than go out with friends, she instilled that in me already...
If parent can try to teach their children the right way and make them depart from the wrong ones, we will have less youth into crimes, children needs some love and also discipline for them to be useful to themselves and the community, but unfortunately we have young people that still needs to be taught how life works giving birth now, they know nothing and end up passing bad morals to their children as well and at the end , the world is becoming what it is...
The third factor is lack of contentment
Many of the youth are living life that is bigger than them, they are living beyond their income, they want to wear the latest cloth, designers, they want to flash and party hard and when they don't have enough money to do all this, they end up looking for fast means which is mostly crime!
Let me share my funny experience
I am an introvert and i don't really go out, i just sit all day operating my system and let say i am tired of working, i will just pick my phone and start chatting on some social media and let say i don't feel like chatting too, then you will see me watching films on netflix! but recently i had a chance to socialize with people, i made some friends and after some time, we decided to go out and have some fun....
That fun cost me 39 000 naira [ 67 dollars] dang that is my feeding allowance for a whole month that i spent in just a day, i kind of felt somehow spending such amount within a twinkle of an eye is not my thing but it happened again, days later, we went and i spent close to 20 000 naira[34 dollars] that was when i decided to put a stop to it because if i keep going and spending like that, i will become addicted to such life style and will end up spending till i go broke! I challenged myself to stop and it worked, i am back to my normal life style now...
It was easy for me because i have self control and i have a goal, i don't want such lifestyle to ruin my plans, but for a youth that have no plans and can be easily influenced, he won't be able to stop and will keep spending, and eventually when he finish spending his money, he will want to look for means to get more money to spend which can make him do the unthinkable like involving in criminal acts!..
Solution
The youth should not be intimated by what they see their friends using, focus on yourself, you are in a competition with yourself and not anyone else, try to become a better version of who you are ....
The parent have a part to play as well, give birth to the numbers of children you know you will be able to take good care of, don't just give birth and abandon the innocent children to the harsh treatment of the world and also parent must learn to be responsible in front of their kids, they imitate faster than we can imagine, most of these teenagers also learn to drink and smoke because they see their parent doing it, it is not all the time we must blame peer pressure for this!
Lastly a child that will be evil will be evil no matter the parental care or other good factors surrounding him/her, so my advice is for the youth, Have a goal in life, be prayerful and try to do things that will make people remember you in a good way.... Be contented with what you have and stay away from bad friends!
