Good day, amazing people of the Hive blockchain. Welcome back to my blog. It is another edition in the #hivelearners community. I am so delighted to participate in this week's prompt, self-driving cars.
To be honest, technology is bearing us to where you don’t know the fact that it keeps advancing day by day. Amazingly, self-driving cars mean vehicles that can move and navigate roads without the operation of humans. Sincerely, it will be a nice innovation because it will come with nice features. One thing about humans is we know how to embrace new things more, especially when it comes to technology, but there are some questions we need to ask ourselves.
The first question is, do I support self-driving cars being mainstream? Well, yes, because with self-driving cars there will be fewer accidents. In most cases accidents are caused by human error; such distractions, overspeeding and drunkenness by drivers are mistakes that waste life. If self-driving cars can help reduce human errors, that will save millions of lives; that will be nice. There are a lot of people that have a phobia when it comes to driving, but with self-driving, life will be made easy for them and also the disabled people.
Well, the idea is good, but it’s kind of complicated. Self-driving relies on sensors and artificial intelligence; the only command they take is what they are programmed to do. We know that life is unpredictable; anything can happen. We can’t predict what will happen in the next second. A child can mistakenly run out of the road; a tyre couldn’t burst, which may lead to an accident. Unlike humans, they will try their best to control the car with experience so that it will not hit the child. Technology depends on the command decoded on them.
Another thing is system failure. No technology is perfect; the hardware can malfunction, which will lead to serious accidents. For instance, if someone hacks the self-driving system, even if it is the camera, it can cause wrong commands, and the worst may happen.
Here comes the big question: who should be held responsible? If not, it is kind of complicated. If the accident is caused by a human driver, he takes the consequences, but when it comes to self-driving, I am kind of confused. Should the owner of the car be held responsible even if they weren’t the one driving, or should the producers take the blame because they built the system? The majority of people will say the producers should be held responsible.
From my own side, I think responsibility should depend on what caused the accident or issue. If it's from a technical problem, the producer should be held accountable, but if the cause is lack of maintenance, then both should be held responsible.
To be honest, self-driving has potential and is not something we should rush into; the need to be tested thoroughly and regulated carefully is important. I don't support the idea that self-driving technology is here to make our lives easy for us and not the other way round. If the manufacturer can guarantee us safety ethically, then self-driving cars can be the best innovation of our time. Until then, let's drive safely.
