Just by bringing up the topic there will be chaos; nobody will like their salary or earnings to be known by the public. For some it will sound like a good idea because many think if the public should know our salaries and how we earn them, it will promote transparency; it will help to reduce exposing people who earn money illegally, and it will also help to reduce corruption. Some feel that it will bring insecurity and jealousy, and the lives of the workers may be in danger. To be honest, it may seem like the right thing to do for me, but it is really complicated.
Well, with their advantage of salary transparency there will be fairness in the working environment in an establishment. A set of people can be doing the same work, and if their salary is not the same, the other person will be earning higher, and the one receiving lower will not know about it. While some are being favoured, many people have been victims of this. The first establishment I worked for, I was unpaid because, right from the first time, I didn’t negotiate well with them. If salaries are to be made public, employers will be able to detect unequal treatment, and they will like to know why certain people who do the same job with them earn higher.
One thing I am sure this transparency will help reduce is discrimination. The level of favouritism going on in most organisations is alarming; some people who do nothing at work end up receiving higher salaries, and people who put in their best receive little salary, but if salary is made public, the people affected can easily speak up when they notice an unfair payment structure.
Accountability with salaries made public will help us to know what the government does with the money. I so much believe that if earnings and salary are open publicly, it will be very hard to steal money, not to talk of hiding the money. It will help the citizens to compare their lifestyles, and when the citizens notice that there is a change in lifestyle based on their official income, with this we can’t hide illegal activities. Just like my country battling with corruption, this will really be of help to us.
We should not only look at the advantage of making salaries public; there are some things we should also consider. For me, our income should be personal and not for the public. For someone like me, if my salary is made public, I will not be comfortable with it, knowing that the extended family and neighbours know how much I earn. If there is one thing I don't want everyone to know, it is my finances. If salary is made public there will be jealousy and resentment.
When salary is made public, public, there is a possibility of insecurity; the lives of people will be in danger. We are living in a country that is full of crimes; making salary public could make people targets for kidnapping, scams and fraud online.
I am of the opinion that instead of making individual earnings online, establishments should focus on a better payment structure.
