Good day, amazing people of the hive block chain. Welcome back to my blog. This is another edition in the #hivelearners community. I am so happy to participate in this prompt topic: mandatory service.
I think every country has a mandatory service. In my country, we go for our mandatory service after we graduate from the university. We will go and serve our fatherland. The mandatory service is known as the National Youth Service Corps. It is a program run within a year.
The national youth service is another way of training the youth to be able to face the realities of life. It is always a way for the youth to learn about people's culture and traditions. It is an exercise that takes youth to different states with people of different cultures.
It is a mandatory service for graduates because most of the workers you will apply for will require your national youth service discharge letter before you will be employed. I can still remember when I was due with my education and I applied for some work, but I was unable to get them because of the national youth service discharge letter.
NYSC was established in 1973. Its main aim is to bring people together so that we can learn and teach each other. The national youth service is really fun. If I may say so, it is an amazing experience I will not forget.
The exercise normally starts with 3 weeks of camping. During this period, the corps members are taught a lot of things; it is really educative, if I may say both skill acquisition and so on. Camping is really fun because of the many activities done there. Believe me, there is no dull moment in camp. The need of camping the corp members for these 3 weeks is to prepare and educate them about their host community and also to enlighten them more.
When I say the camp is fun, I mean that there are many activities, such as Mr. and Mrs. NYSC, football, volleyball, dance, a display of tradition and drama, etc. Of course, the military men and men of war are there to discipline and train the corps members.
After the three weeks of camping, each corps member is posted to their place of primary assignment. Where they will help to develop the community.
I can still remember. My friend tells me that this one-year service is a waste of time, but I don’t think so. The experience is really amazing. You get to meet friends who will help you in life. It was during my mandatory service that I got to know about this platform. There is a lot to learn during this period.
I think the national youth service should be scrapped because it has lost its worth. The lives of the corps are in danger due to the level of insecurity. What is the need of going to serve our fatherland? Your life is at stake. If the government is not ready to provide security for the corps, it is better scrapped.
During my days of service, the insecurity was not this much. Currently, corps members don’t wear their uniforms for any function. National youth service is now done on the low. The only reason I think it should be scrapped is because of the high level of insecurity.
