My people go say School na scam! Why? Do you blame them? Who can we blame here? My questions are getting too much, right? The answer is very simple. Many people end up studying courses that they don't like just to have a certificate. It's very difficult to get admitted into higher institutions with the desired course you cherish. That's why we see many graduates that only pass through school, and school didn't pass through them. Apart from that, practicals are not given the utmost attention. In my school, we were not allowed to enter the computer room, except we had something very important to do. Our ICT lecturer couldn't write a program that runs. In this kind of environment, what kind of graduate would the school produce
?
Let's remove one and replace it
Maybe there are many irrelevant subjects in the curriculum. They say it's good to have an idea in all subjects, which is nice. However, the most important aspect is taken with levity. I really suffered a lot in school because there was no room for practical classes. All we do is theory, theory, theory. It's always theory upon theory. The only time for practicals would present us with incompetent lecturers. They are very good in theory, but not practical oriented. Imagine a lecturer teaching programming language cannot write a correct simple program without consulting the textbook
Reduce the theoretical aspects, and improve the practicals, or strike balance as the case may be
Theory is very important, but in a situation where it takes up almost all the percentage in a learning environment where practicals should also be given a fair chance, there would be an imbalance. In the curriculum, there are days or periods meant for practicals. Most times, it's used for theory. Limited time is set aside for practicals which are not properly conducted. Most people learn faster with practicals. With only practicals, some students would explain any question given to them so far it wraps around what was learnt in the practical class
There was a time we were taught how to troubleshoot a system in class. It was theory. Just write the note and read. Those who have a low level of assimilation couldn't get it well, but when we practiced it, they all did well in that particular question in the exam. Practicals help to learn faster. It brings out the best in students. The person you think the dumbest can surprise you if taught with good combination of theory and practicals
The system of education in Nigeria is now 6 3 3 4. I wouldn't agree with that, but the only thing that would add more value to the system is the proper screening of Teachers and lecturers. Many government institutions employ based on qualifications. From what I've seen so far with many teachers and lecturers, they are not capable. Some students are far better than them. Students are meant to learn from them and if they are not up to standard, it would tell on the students. GIGO, (Gabbage In Garbage Out). It's what you feed the computer that it brings out as result. So one of the system I would change totally is the recruitment idea. Qualification is as important as being able to pass the knowledge professionally into others. While the practical aspects is worked on, qualified and capable hands should take the mantle of incurcating knowledge into students. With this, I think there would be an improvement in the educational system in this country, and more reliable and capable graduates would be produced
This is ckole the laughing gas.
