Sugar is everywhere in our tea, soft drinks, snacks, breads, cereals, sauces and even foods that are marketed as healthy. Everybody consumes it every day without even really thinking about it. When we look at the long term effects of sugar on our health, then an important question pops up, should sugar be regulated just the same way alcohol is regulated.
It's not as if sugar is evil, even taken in the right amount, it provides energy and makes food enjoyable. The real problem of sugar is the way we consume it and how easily it snakes into our diets. Taking sugar in excess has been linked to some serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, heart problem, tooth decay. You these health issues are not short term effects, but it has been building up quietly overtime.
Unlike alcohol, people know the effect, but people still choose to drink it. In the case of sugar that is usually consumed unknowingly, many people don't even realize how much sugar they have taken in until they start having health problems, especially high blood pressure
Alcohol is regulated because it can cause harm when misused. There are age limits, warning labels, and clear public health messages about its risk and when it is bound to happen to an individual. While sugar on the other hand is rarely talked about with the same seriousness, in fact we always say sugar is good for kids, it's only adults from 40 years that are bad for it .even though the impact of sugar on public health is massive. Because of lack of regulations and awareness, people are not fully aware of what they are consuming or the consequences of what may come with it. Clear warning and proper labelling will help people make more informed choices about there diet.
There is this sweet that came out for children cause the packaging is not really for adult, I pick it up one day just to read what they use in making it. I saw where a warning was labeled, I decided to read it and find out, that children under the age of 2 to 4 years are not allowed to consume it and children from 5 years that will consume it, must eat it at once in one day. Before I read that a child has already finish one and was crying for another. I quickly tell the mother was on the sweet body. She shouted that that's the second one his child is consuming today. And his just 2 years old.
Regulating sugar does not mean banning it completely because almost all the food we eat has sugar. It just means placing limits on how sugar companies can add sugar in some certain products, especially those that are marketed to children. This way there will be clearer food labels that show exactly how much sugar a product contains and what taking it excess will cause to the body. Public awareness campaigns could educate people on safe sugar consumption, just like campaigns warn people about drinking and driving or underage drinking. Taxes on sugary drinks and snacks could also reduce overconsumption and encourage healthier alternatives.
