Our education system currently is becoming something else; so many things are overlooked and, over time, forgotten because we are busy trying to copy other people's cultures.
So many things have been changed to suit each school, some subjects and courses now seem like irrelevant courses and it no longer holds value.
History is one of them; it's gradually losing its value in my country.
That is why the majority of the present youth don't even understand anything about the history of their country anymore; they can't tell how their country became independent, and some don't even know men of value who fought for our country to be where it is now.
History is very important because, without history, so many things will go wrong; studying history helps us understand how events in the past made things the way they are today. With lessons from the past, we not only learn about ourselves and how we came to be but also develop the ability to avoid mistakes and create better paths for our societies. We can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures, and technologies were built and how the changes came to be.
Why do we study History?
It’s a question that many students ask, and the answer isn’t always clear. Some might see history as nothing more than a list of dates and events to memorize for exams, while others view it as fascinating stories about the past. At its core, studying history is crucial because it allows us to understand how our world got to where it is today; it helps to find out how scientists discovered so many things we are enjoying today. By examining how people lived in the past and how societies have evolved over time, we can gain insights into current social, and political issues.
History should be made compulsory in school, even if they can turn it into question and answer class; it should be taught with facts and examples, not just reading and forcing students to cram dates and names. History should be made to be an interactive class so it won't look boring to students cause most student avoids it cause they find it to be uninteresting.
If students were taught about the achievements and sacrifices of others for the nation, some things wouldn't be happening currently. Their lots of mistakes that people make now all because of lack of history.
I loved history way back in school because the teacher that was teaching us history then was very good at it; she made every class fun, she had a new song to teach us, and her pattern, or will I say the style of teaching, made a serious impact in me.
I think the school board should take history more seriously than before; it shouldn't be scrapped or kept for particular students but for all.
Imagine asking a student if he knows about King Jaja of Opobo, and he or she has no idea.
