Growing up, my family didn't have cable TV or a satellite dish. My dad was too strict to allow any of that. It had to be school and school alone.
Nevertheless, one show that I could always look forward to and trust to keep me entertained was Wale Adenuga production's Super Story! As a testament to the authenticity, efficacy, and popularity of the series, it won the best television series award at the Nigerian Broadcasters' Merit Awards in 2016.
Super Story aired on the National Television Network(NTA) every Thursday at 8pm. The show lasts one hour with about 2 commercial breaks in-between. I remember my sister's and I getting all worked up on the few times that the show extends a bit past an hour and my dad wants to interrupt us because he wants to watch the late night news.
Super Story featured a lot of awesome stories such as A night to remember, Omoye, Mr. Lecturer, More than a friend, one bad apple, to mention a few. Of all the stories, that have aired on Super Story, my favorite as I remember it, would be Nnenna.
'Nnenna' tells the story of a young brilliant girl who was killed by her late father's bosom friend, Mr Wiliki. Nnenna's soul is not at rest with this and her ghost sets out to expose all the many evil acts of Mr. Wiliki. In order to achieve this, she enlists the help of Akin, a young troubled boy with low self-esteem.
I remember the story having multiple good songs, a lot of them in the native Igbo language.
I've grown now and I can't even remember the last time I watched the show. I'm not even sure if they still air it. Still, watching that show made my Thursdays as a child one to look forward to. My parents even followed some of the stories with us.
Art. What would we do without it?
