I was surprised three years ago when a teacher told me that for almost 15 years, she has been working and her salary is not up to 20,000 naira.
This same woman has family, and she spends 1,000 naira to work each day. I know she might be a junior staff, but for 15 years, collecting something small like that is not fair.
Because of that very issue, most of the staff began missing work some days, and seriously, you won't blame them, if you put yourself in their shoes, you might even do worse.
When you hear that people are government workers, you would expect that they are enjoying or living life, until you begin to interact with them.
Seriously, if the minimum wage were to be doubled or even tripled, it would take people a long way.
A lot of people's lives would be improved. Most workers would at least upgrade. With something like that, those who have the mind to support their loved ones would have enough to settle their needs and to spare.
As it stands, most workers' salary is not even enough to settle basic needs, how would they even support others if not for the fact that God has just been faithful, a lot of people would have given up on life.
There are a lot of things that people want to do, but due to how poor their earnings are, they are limited.
Good pay brings motivation; it encourages people to work harder. Unfortunately, most organizations here don't pay well.
This is why most people in Nigeria prefer to travel outside to work. Someone would be working and receiving hourly pay abroad, but in Nigeria, one has to work for thirty days, yet still receives little money at the end.
No wonder many organizations are failing; most people don't put energy to work anymore. If you visit some primary schools in my place, you would see students roaming about without teachers.
If you make a proper inquiry, you would learn that they have enough teachers, but most of them don't come to work.
Unfortunately, even the supervisors who are supposed to ensure that things are put in place end up not doing their jobs because they understand how bad the system is in terms of rewarding workers.
It hurts because those innocent children who are supposed to be taught and groomed properly end up having poor education.
Talking about how much minimum wage one would have to be considered rich, we have to understand that getting rich is not first of all about earning much, it's about knowing what to do with what you earn.
There are people who earned reasonable amounts of money while they were in service, but when they retired, they became poor, and there are people who earned not so much, but they created wealth out of it.
If you ask me how much someone would need to earn to make them consider themselves rich, I will say it depends on the person's mindset. Some will earn 50,000 monthly and consider themselves rich, while others will need millions first.
For me, I can't give any amount, but if I earn something that can settle bills, cover transportation, give me the opportunity to help others, and also to save and invest, then I think I can say I am rich, regardless of what that amount is.
The problem is that the more we earn, the more our problems increase, but if the money keeps increasing as the problems increase, I am rich, trust me.
