What is First Aid
First aid refers to medical attention that is usually administered immediately after the injury occurs and at the location where it occurred.
After gaining admission into higher institutions, the first society I joined was “Nigeria Red Cross society” which basically focus more on giving first aid. As a red crosser, we were taught that “before you can give first aid, you must be certified as a first aider” and luckily for me, I took all the basic courses of a first aider and became a certified first aider. Anyways, before I continue I would like to introduce myself.
My name is fashtioluwa and I’m the alien from mars. It’s nice to meet you all and I welcome you to my blog
Oh, the image above is an image of me and my friends when we went camping with some instructors to broaden our knowledge on first aid. After my training and I got my certificate, something amazing happened.
We had an office in the school which serves as our base for all student who are members of the Nigeria Red Cross society. One this beautiful afternoon, I was the only one at the office, most of the student are either home or at their classes. I was watching a movie on my phone when I heard a lady calling out for anyone in the office.
“Hello, hello, is anyone here. Please answer me”
I rushed out to check who it was, it was a beautiful lady and she came with a test to confirm my knowledge on the training I had undergo. It wasn’t a planned test but she came with a boy who had a bleeding injury.
“I saw this boy on my way back from class holding his hand and bleeding so much”
Immediately I saw the amount of blood coming out of the little boys hand, I lost my composure immediately. I became scared and I wish I could drive them away, but I already swore an oath as a first aider. I became confused on what to do, so I invited them into the office and started thinking on what first aid I should issue for it.
Meanwhile I did the training and pass the test, I never knew real life scenarios were different. I relaxed my nerves, walked to the little boy and ask him to raise his hand above his head.
I brought out our first aid kit, then began to disinfect the wound. At this point, I wasn’t scared again because it was something I was trained for. I cleaned up his wound neatly then discovered it was a pretty dip cut. I asked the lady to call the school ambulance with the office phone for quick response.
I stop the bleeding, I made a thick pad with gauze bandage then tie it up with a knot. In a short while, the ambulance came but before they came, I took down the information of the lady and the little boy. I followed them to the school hospital where they dress his wound properly.
The cut was cause by a razor blade.
That day, I got a real life experience and since then, I was never scared when I see another case of a casualty who needs my help.
Oh, that’s me again. In my ceremonial uniform. I got that uniform after I had successfully completed my basic first aid and practical first aid training.
