I remembered primary school days when we recited the definition of some words every morning, pollution is one of them. It was defined then as the release of harmful substances into the environment, I don’t know if there is an advanced definition but I am certain it would take a complete factory reset to get that definition out of my head.
I would have loved to focus more on the world but the task restricts me to my area and regardless of how big or small I can stretch my write-up, one thing we must understand is that we all have contributed to polluting the environment we live in.
If you doubt it, raise your hands if you haven’t done any of the things listed below.
•Burning of solid waste
•Dumping of waste on the road or
in drainage
•Releasing of fumes from engines
such as cars, power generators,
and others.
•Peeing on the road; I remember
peeping in rivers when I was a
kid.
•Making noise from speakers:
Many do not know that’s noise
pollution.
The major cause of pollution in my environment is the improper management of waste by lots of people and this makes us experience all kinds of pollution which are land, water, and air pollution.
Everyone is guilty of this including me; let me give an example so that we all can understand.
When we throw our waste outside, the perishable items in it decay and smell which causes air pollution. The place it was dropped becomes messy which is land pollution and when it rains, these wastes are washed into the drainages. Some of the waste which includes plastics and polythene bags escapes into small or big water bodies which is water pollution, some of this waste piles up in the drainage system and causes erosion which destroys property and even the land itself.
Many of us burn our waste instead of giving it to the waste management workers, we think we are saving money but we are automatically contributing to the damage to the ecosystem which we will end up suffering for at the end of everything. Little do we know that these things contribute to the climate change we are complaining about today, I believe many of us are ignorant about the effects of these things.
I said in a recent post that we aren’t hurting nature but ourselves with these things we do from time to time, tell me how do Cholera, erosion, and respiratory diseases affect nature? If polluting the water kills all the fishes, tell me who is at loss.
Every form of pollution we are into will come back to hurt us, the impact of industries can’t be overlooked as well and every solution for pollution starts with us as an individual.
The solution to all these is simple, we must learn to manage our waste properly. The waste we dispose wrongly is many people's source of wealth and you can make little money from your waste as well.
Do not waste perishable items. Food is an example, don’t cook more than you can consume to avoid accumulating waste, this will even help you save money.
Plastics, metals, rubbers, and even cartons can be recycled, instead of disposing them anyhow; you can make money by storing them neatly and sell to their respective buyers.
Aside from these things mentioned above, there should be proper awareness among the public on the effects of disposing waste wrongly. The General Public should be given proper lessons about managing waste, we are the culprit and will also become the victims of our actions at the end of the day.
The power of educating people about it can't be overlooked, it will go a long way. We can't leave the government to it alone, we should take the responsibility as long as we have better knowledge about it.
Another thing is ensuring that the kids are given these lessons as well because they're not exempted from generating waste as well.
There should be strict laws about pollution, huge fines and other punishment that can make people stop mismanaging waste should be made and I believe this thing would yield positive results.
Do you want to participate in the contest as well? Feel free to do so but before that, you should read THIS first.
