Modifying NEWS isn't a trend that started today, it's a practice from many centuries that has been passed on to this day. Government believe that filtering the information they put out there is one of the best ways to keep the country in order and while this act has worked for some government, it backfired in some administration.
I grew with a mother who is very familiar with history and she loves to listen to the news always. Back then, watching or listening to the news was a must even though I never enjoyed it. On several occasions, mom would confidently say some of the news were false or filtered and I always thought she was only exaggerating because of her knowledge about history but as I grew older, I realised that some News were truly modified.
One of the things I find really disgusting is me being lied to and I believe it's the same case with many people across the world. The government filtering the news is a terrible thing from our perspective because we really want to be involved in everything happening up there but if we look deeply, there are a lot of information within the government that should be kept secret.
It's not my first time saying this but a lot of people have misunderstood my point thinking I am in support of bad governance but that's not the case and I hope this article will open our eyes to a lot of things we are not considering.
As parents, I want to believe that it's not everything happening in our lives we tell our children about and even if our children must know somethings, I can tell that we filter information just to ensure that things are running smoothly as it should within the family.
Been the eldest child of the family, there are things I don't bother involving my siblings in because they might not have the strength or knowledge to process the situation like I am so doing so it's best to keep somethings away from them. If we can hold back some information within the family to keep everyone at peace, why do we think the government shouldn't do the same thing to ensure the smooth running of the country?
A few years ago, the Nigeria soldiers were ambushed by the popular sect. known as Boko Haram. I honestly do not how sure the military are about the culprit but that has nothing to do with the point I am driving at.
I was really interested in the News because it doesn't make any sense to me and while reading different post about the incident online, I learned that the Army was actually going on a special operation to sabotage a Boko Haram hideout but the news about operation had been put out even before the mission.
The citizens who were aware felt happy that the government was taking action but on the other hand, it was a huge setback for the military as they lost soldiers and even many of their sophisticated ammunition.
Wouldn't it have been better if they had just kept the operation away from the public?
I believe that they could have saved lives if the news had been filtered or even manipulated for the interest of the military but they didn't and it backfired. One thing we have to understand that it is not easy creating a balance between making vital decisions and pleasing the people since the citizens demands aren't the same and the government is always in a tight spot trying to joggle things.
Although putting all the news out there raw would bring transparency and accountability but there are lots of risk involved just like the military experience I shared earlier.
I really can't blame the people who want to know everything happening in the government because those people we put in power can't be trusted since majority of them become a completely new person once they get into position. Only if we had trust worthy politicians, many citizens would be rest assured that the country is a safe hands and trusting the government decision for us wouldn't be a problem.
