Going to the hospital in this part of the world Is viewed as what one would not put as part of their to-do list on a normal day because the hospital environment is viewed as where bad occurrences take place, we even have special prayers against hospital appointments, because what most likely take us to the hospital is usually serious and in most cases after trial and error self-medication that yields no improvement during añ ailment.
Imagine having to grow up in such an environment, luckily for me and my siblings, we never had any serious ailment that got us admitted to a hospital, my mum was our personal doctor, she had a plastic container which I can refer to her first aid box, where different first aid drugs and treatment were usually gotten and administered to us when we fell it, she also was fond of using traditional method of detoxifying our body known as 'ukebe' in my language, I wish I can translate that word. Maybe lucky for us her methods worked or probably due to our strong immune systems.
I believe that system of nurturing us made it difficult for me as an adult to just voluntarily walk into a hospital for a medical checkup, the only time I really had no choice was during my pregnancies, and all of that old mentality changed after becoming a mother myself, thou my mum's method worked on us then or maybe we were lucky, being more informed and also after experiencing a depressing moment that had my first daughter hospitalized for months t just less than a year old, I now know better why prevention is better than cure and also reaching the three decades age mark made me more conscious and intentional about my well being. To be sincere, J can't remember the last time I went for a medical checkup, probably early last year due to the throbbing pain I usually feel in my back, I was given some meds which helped relieve the pain alongside heeding to the doctor's advice of maintaining good posture while sewing and not sewing for a long period or at a stretch, which I've tried to heed to, but lately the pain has become unbearable again so I've had it in mind to have a quick visit to the hospital.
Normally, I don't like taking drugs, so self-medication is not a thing for me, one of my New Year resolutions was to take eating healthy important not skipping my means as I used to the previous years, it's just one month of doing this, and I can already testify the benefits I'm seeing, from my glowing skin to maintaining a healthy weight rather than looking malnourished
Intentionality about one's health is what every one of us should not take for granted, whether young or old, the rise of different diseases in this age where being young is not an advantage against these diseases out there, paying more attention to our health the best way we can also going for full body checkup is paramount
