Hello lovelies, a very happy Sunday to you all, as you know, or if you don't, its another creative Sunday episode in the hive learners community and I will like to share with us the process of how I made a peplum top and skirt for a plus size female.
So a friend of mine referred another friend of hers to me to make her a peplum, according to her, most tailors refused sewing for her because she is plus size, while the ones that did end up spoiling her fabric. She was so down and had even lost hope in making bespoke outfits for herself. I felt bad about what she had to go through because of her size and assured her, she will get the styles she so desires from me. And her first pick was a peplum top and three-quarter skirt to slay in an upcoming event. Peplum blouses are blouses that have flares(circles) attached to them at the waist.
So, join me as I take you through the process.
Duration: It took me the whole day to make this dress, some activities in between.
Materials used
Ankara fabric
Lace fabric
Lining fabric
Soft stay
Warden(used as a bust pad)
Zipper
Matching thread
Process
- Starting, I drafted out all my patterns, which is an armhole bustier pattern for both front and back, I added stay and padded the bust area to give it structure.
front
back
I also drafted a straight skirt pattern, for the front and back.
- remember my definition of peplum tops, I cut out the flares, using her round waist measurement, she wanted a double flare, I've cut out four pieces of flare, the two smaller ones will be joined together, likewise the bigger ones.
- then I cut the sleeve pattern, one sleeve as lace, while the other as Ankara
*Note:all patterns are also replicated on a lining fabric except the sleeves.
- Back to the front pattern, I joined it all together and also turned it using the lining fabric
- I turned the back pattern too after joining.
- Next I Joined the front and back together, and also attached the sleeve.
- time to attach the flare part to the upper blouse.
- As you can see, for my skirt pattern, I designed it using the lace fabric, joined both sides together, and also attached a band.
Here is the final look. She is so happy to have this outfit as one of her own, and I'm glad I could be of assistance. But sadly I couldn't adorn my mannequin with this outfit, because apparently, it's oversize for it, so please bear with me.
