I don't think there is a Nigerian kid, especially those in primary school who doesn't know what first aid means as this is one of the very first health science topics we were taught right from nursery school and even showed what a first aid box looked like, well this is me reminiscing my memory as a kid, a school can lack a chemistry or physics laboratory in Nigeria, but never a first aid box.
As for our parents, though they might not have the box like first aid kit, but trust most moms to have a bag or container dedicated for this purpose. I still recall my mum's special bag for keeping just first aid essentials from pain meds to spirit, bandage, etc. As a young adult during my spinsterhood, I never thought of the need to have a first aid box, even when I stayed alone, and in the case of a home accident, this would have me always running to the pharmacy and possibly running unexpected expenses even for a minor injury that can be cared for at home.
But becoming a mother changed all of that, Children are very delicate and also a parent's utmost responsibility, so making sure a first aid box was readily at home didn't even need thinking twice as their immune is still building especially at the early age, it takes experience for you to understand that a child can suddenly develop fever, or injure themselves while playing and we always need to be there as guardian or parent to care for them.
My first aid bag has been a real helping hand in these moments, I don't have the box type and I think as long as my bag is clean and also does the same job as the box, it doesn't matter. My most recent experience using the first aid kit was just last week Sunday, I woke my children up to prepare them for church, before I knew it, my youngest daughter started vomiting, it didn't stop at one or two episodes, I was worried at fist because it was the weekend and pharmacies hardly open on a Sunday, thankfully I had ORS readily available in my first aid bag, to help restore her lost body fluid and give her strength before calling the doctor and getting prescriptions for later time, indeed, the ORS helped restore her energy also saving me from a panic attack on a Sunday morning.
Not just that day alone, but on several occasions my first aid bag has really been a helping hand to me, and I take it as important, making sure to check for expiring dates of the drugs in it, and also refill used ones, so I don't run shelter skelter which is never hoped for on cases of emergency.
The reason why I urge everyone, whether you are young, old, single of married, to make sure to have a first aid kit, you might not know its importance now, but one day you will value investing in such home essentials.
