History is not just written in books. It also stands in our streets, our houses, our parks, and in front of our schools in the form of statues, monuments, and buildings named after famous people. These famous people shaped the future of the world, what if it reveal the darkside of these heroes? It revealed the injustice done by the these leader whom statues we have adores in our locality.
What if a nation find out that it's founder had been cruel, unjust, corrupt and murderer. Would they remember him as a hero?
Please stop and Imagine for awhile….!!!
World is making rapid progress, everyone has become conscious and aware about the things i.e statues, monuments etc that surrounds them. When new generations learn about the monument who is cruel, unjust and cause pain to someone they naturally feel uncomfortable.
They ask:
“Why should we keep honoring someone who hurt or kill so many people?”
Many people want to remove these kind of statues on the basis of respect for victims. If a person’s actions caused suffering, then keeping their statue in a public place feels like celebrating the pain. Imagine walking past a statue every day that reminds you of someone who oppressed your people. It's like to add salt to injury.
It's not history my friends it's the wound that would never heal.
I'm a history teacher and I have read the achievements of those ruler who killed the every single person of their rivals. History is actually bleeding somehow everywhere.
Current Scenerio
Recently, Epstein Files case unveiled the popular political personalities who were regarded as the role model for their followers. If something is wrong for one person might not be same for others.
Pakistan History
In Grade 9/10 I read about Islamization Policy of General Zia-ul-Haq. There were details about his efforts to enforce Islamic laws in Pakistan. He was super hero for me at that time. Now, the deep understanding and study of history revealed me how General Zia-ul-Haq damaged democracy and freedom.
He jailed his political opponent that has become a political culture now. The one who is in power put his opponent behind the bars. I'm not target any specific person. I am here for critical analysis not for supporting PTI or PMLN etc.
Hadood Laws that was enforced by General Zia-ul-Haq created fear in the society. Democrated voices were silent. I really want the society think about picturing these heroes.
Ending Remarks
We should be aware of about the historical facts. Monument, statues doesn't speak but we can. Let's raise our voice against injustice and cruelty. If we really want to grow as a society we need to accept our history.
