Our Name, for me, is the very first precious intangible gift given by our parents as we come out into this world, and it carries the identity of who we are and where we come from. And even if I am given a chance to change it, just like my religion, I would prefer not to, because it was given to me by my precious parents, so changing it means disowning them. My grandfather once said, I was born Catholic, so I will die the same. That does the same with my name.
I did have several names back in the day that people wanted to call me. I am certain that most of you guys have experienced being called different names when you were young. Some are pretty, some are ugly, and some are funny. Of course, we prefer to be called by a pretty name.
If I make a name for someone, my future child, for instance, I want it to be unique with a beautiful meaning. While thinking about all the names in my family, they all seem random. It makes me think about what was up in my mother's mind when she gave names to each of us after giving birth. But I am certain that all have special meaning.
You all know me as Jane, and it's my second name. It's a common name, actually, that has been used in poems, movies, songs, and others. It is simple, yet lovely. I was named Ruby Jane by my parents. But I prefer not to reveal my family name here for privacy purposes. I know little about my name, to be honest. Ruby is from my father's name, Robert, while Jane is from my birth month, January. They should have added the beautiful name of my mother, Leslie. But I was the first daughter, so my father was responsible for giving me my name.
I remember when I was in my fourth year of high school, our English teacher gave meaning to our names. I wasn't satisfied with his definition, which he probably got from the meaning of my first name. He told me that it was a precious name. Of course, I know that ruby is a precious gem. He said I am warm-hearted. I guess he just described my personality, not my name.
This Hive Learner featured topic made me curious about the real meaning of my name. When I searched for it, I was even surprised and couldn't believe that the meaning truly described my whole character. If you are curious about yours, you can check it here or here.
Ruby Jane is realistic, artistic, compassionate, sympathetic, and has a sense of responsibility for the welfare of others. I can give up what I want so I can give what others need. Does my name truly show how selfless I am, or is it just a coincidence? Those who know me here might agree with this fact. Home and family are always the most important things to me. It also implies that I am a goal-seeker, and take action to achieve them. This is another fact. The only thing I don't like about Ruby Jane is that she tends to worry too much over matters which she could do nothing. And this would affect her whole well-being.
I couldn't agree more with all of these because they are so true! And that explains why I am Ruby Jane.
Meanwhile, in Hebrew, Ruby means red, while Jane means Yahweh/God is merciful. And if you know the Hebrew meaning of God with us, then you'll get a hint of my family name.
With all of these, I can say that, despite the challenges that come my way, I know God is merciful and He is always with me. And now that I know the real meaning of my name, there is no reason to change it. As mentioned above, my grandfather once said, I was born Catholic, so I will die the same. And the same goes for my name.
But regardless of the meaning of our names, what matters is the character we are showing in the real world. Because whatever action we take will be reflected in our name. If you are good, even your ugliest name will sound beautiful and remarkable.
Happy weekend. Thanks for stopping by.
