And today being Thursday, travelling down to the weekend grooving, I was privileged to meet with some of my friends, college and well wishers, er had length of discussion about alot and one which includes this beautiful question I'm bringing your way this wonderful afternoon. The question goes thus.....
Hey John Petra, CAN A POLICE OFFICER ARREST A SOLDIER IN NIGERIA?
And my sincere response to them was...
In Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force remains the primary institution responsible for law enforcement, internal security, and the power of arrest. The Armed Forces are established mainly for national defence and support operations.
Legally, a Police officer can arrest any individual including a soldier... where there is reasonable suspicion of a crime or when an offence has been committed.
However, professionalism and institutional respect must guide such actions:
When a serving soldier is involved, proper coordination with military authorities is expected.
In many cases, after an initial arrest, the suspect may be handed over to their commanding unit, especially if the matter relates to military service.
This is not about superiority... it is about respecting structure, jurisdiction, and due process.
In urgent situations involving threat, violence, or active crime, a Police officer has full authority to act immediately, regardless of whether the suspect is civilian or military.
And this is the key point of my writing.
No rivalry. No intimidation. No confusion.
Only clearly defined roles, mutual respect, and adherence to the law.
