The hive learners’ community has again presented us with another topic and I’m so glad to be participating in it.
A lot of people believe in zodiac signs and they link all they do; how they react to things, their characters, and even their future to their zodiac signs. Do you really think stuff about stars and sun determines who we are?
I got to know about my zodiac sign when I was in high school, SSS1 (Senior Senior Secondary School 1/ Grade 10) to be precise. Those days we didn’t really know things, all we cared about was just to get good grades and having fun. My class monitor back then was so obsessed with Zodiac signs. She was a very brilliant girl, the most brilliant in my class. She got high grades, even in further mathematics and all sciences subjects (my worst subject). But one thing about her is that she is so obsessed with zodiac signs, that she blames everything she does on her zodiac sign.
She had this little notebook where she recorded all her classmate’s zodiac signs. She came to me one day and asked about my zodiac sign. “Zodiac sign? Is that a kind of poem, storybook, or definition of some literary term?” She was so pissed because I had no idea what the zodiac sign was. Then she sat me down and lectured me about Zodiac signs , astrology, and how important it is for me to know mine. She asked for my birth date and I told her, then she said something along these lines “oh, you’re an Aquarius, you’re irresponsible and impersonal, our zodiac signs are not compatible”. I was very surprised and confused at the same time. Like, we are not compatible because of something about the sun?

When I got home, I was so bothered about it that I had to go on the internet and learn more. Well, to my surprise most of what I saw matched my personality. My birthday falls between 21 January to 18 February or 20 January to 19 February, which means my zodiac sign is Aquarius; the water cycle. But after some years, I’ve come to realize those things are a bunch of jokes and people use them to get away with things.

I believe in a lot of things; luck, and grace, and I even slightly believe in magic, but zodiac signs are way out of it. I don’t believe the sun has anything to do with our personalities, talk less of predicting our future, and who we should be with.
According to my birthdate, I’m an Aquarius. When I checked on the internet, I learned Aquarians get angry easily but are very good at not showing it. In my case, it is the opposite. Yes, I get angry easily, but I show it immediately. When I’m mad at someone, I express my feelings immediately, that is the only way I can forget about things and move on.
Most of these signs contradict who I am, in fact when I went through other zodiac signs, I found I fit into about 2 other zodiac signs.
Nowadays, people have allowed their zodiac signs to get into their heads, and they use it as a cover-up for every bad and irresponsible thing they do. “I get angry easily, I can’t help it because it is my zodiac sign”. No! You have a very bad character and you’re blaming it on your zodiac sign? Ridiculous! It is absurd how people blame their zodiac signs for every bad thing they do. I mean, you should work on yourself, and try to change your bad character instead of blaming it on Zodiac signs.
Some people even take it as a guide to relationships. Don’t you think they are taking it too far? Well, I do. How on earth’s name will your zodiac sign prevent you from being in a relationship with someone? You’re an Aquarius doesn’t mean you cannot be friends (or in a relationship) with a Leo.
In conclusion, zodiac signs are fun, it is very interesting to know your zodiac sign and the traits, but for me, I don’t think they truly tell us who we are. I respect those that believe in it, everyone is free to have an opinion.
