The argument of being able to stay anonymous on social media or not is quite subjective. I believe it is possible because I have seen it happen. I believe your purpose for having a social media handle and also the platform you choose to be active on will largely determine if you could stay anonymous or not.
👻 Rising of Ghost Accounts
There are many social media users today who run "ghost accounts". These are accounts where the owner doesn't show their face, their real name and definitely not share personal details about their life. In many cases, the content they post is usually AI-generated videos, stock clips, animations, quotes, or narrated stories.
They have literally never showed their face on their social media handle but yet seem to even make money off it. This happens more on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. The audience consumes the content without caring about the person behind it. In such cases, anonymity is very much possible, it is even an advantage because the brand becomes more about the content, not the creator.
🕵️♂️ Digital Footprints and Public Anonymity
However, being anonymous does not mean you are invisible like Martian Manhunter. Every online activity leaves this digital footprint. Platforms collect data such as your IP addresses and device information. So while you may be a ghost or look anonymous to other users, the platform itself still knows that you exist.
🤝 Anonymity in Community-Driven Platforms Like our Hive
In a place like Hive, it might be impossible to stay anonymous forever because in most communities, they want to be sure you are a real person and would also love to know who they let into their community. Many communities on Hive want to be sure that the people joining them are real individuals and not bots.
I remember when I read the general chat of a Discord channel. Someone came in and hid his name and picture. He claimed to be mysterious but the other members eventually got his identity. Even here on Hive Learners, we go through a verification process to be sure the members are real. In this kind of setting, you don't really have a choice than to compromise your anonymity. Here on Hive, trust and interaction is valued. Over time, through writing and commenting, your personality tends to show even if your real name or face is hidden.
Because of this, it may not always be possible to remain anonymous forever on Hive, especially if you wish to build relationships, get community support, or connect with specific groups.
🎯 Balancing Intent and Platform Choice
Is it really possible to exist as an anonymous person in the digital world? I believe so, yes, it is possible, at least to a certain degree. I think that one can remain anonymous in terms of one's face, one's name, and one's location. One can remain anonymous in terms of not revealing one's private life in creating content. However, one cannot remain completely anonymous in terms of one's presence and digital footprint.
In the end, I think that one's anonymity in cyberspace depends on one's intention and one's choice of platform. If one's intention is to create content without becoming the brand, then I think that anonymity can be achieved. However, if one's intention is to connect with people and groups, then one's identity will eventually come out one way or the other.
