But would you believe this same person almost hit his sister with a chair as a child?
Yeah, I was very young, probably around six years old, but still, if that attitude wasn't controlled or given attention to as child by my parents, I would have developed a very terrible temper, grown into someone constantly controlled by anger and maybe even do something that could have landed me in trouble.
β¨ Seeing the word Temper in the hive learners prompt for the week brought memories that make me cover my face a bit out of shame ππΉ.
Forgive me for being a bit biblical here, but I saw a verse in the bible that I always remember whenever anger is discussed:
Ephesians 4:26-27
Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil
One thing I have learnt in life is that bowing to anger can cost you a whole lot. Just 5 minutes of bowing to hot or uncontrolled temper can ruin a reputation that you took years to build and even your relationship.
Everyone gets angry, yes but how you act on it and the decisions you make at that heated moment matters a lot.
There was a video circulating online some weeks ago about a young man in Delta state, Nigeria. He was apprehended by the police because weapons was found in the waybill he was carrying. The young man tried to explain that he knew nothing about it and he was setup but one of the officers out of anger and impatience, he decided to take laws into his hands and execute him publicly in broad day light. It was an unfortunate situation.
That single moment of uncontrolled temper ruined multiple lives.
The officer has been reportedly debadged and also taken into custody. That display of hot temper has cost him his reputation, career and also freedom. That is why I personally do not believe hot temper should be used as an excuse for bad behavior.
I agree that some people might struggle with anger than other because our experiences and the environment we lived in is different, but adulthood comes with accoutability. The socitery can't be blaming adults destructive behaviour on "has anger issues".
I also believe people with anger problems deserve help and understanding, especially if they are genuinely trying to improve themselves.
As a society, I think we need to normalize emotional discipline and anger management from childhood. I was fortunate enought to have that as a child and it helped me grow. Even till date, when I blow hot, a simple sentence from my father makes me see that overreaction wasn't even necessary.
Many parents often only focus on punishing children for angry behavior without actually teaching them how to control emotions properly.
People should be taught how to communicate their frustrations calmly, walk away from heated situations, and think before reacting. Silence or walking away can save you from loads of regret.
