The topic of reservation in India has always been sensitive, complex, and deeply debated. Reservation exists in almost every sector—education, government jobs, banks, hospitals, and many public institutions. Fixed seats are reserved for certain categories, and along with that come relaxations in age limits, cut-off marks, and even application fees. On paper, the intention behind reservation is to provide equal opportunities to historically disadvantaged communities. But the real question is whether the current system is actually achieving that goal or creating new inequalities.
If reservation is meant to uplift backward groups, then why does it rely so heavily on lowering marks and relaxing age limits? Opportunity should never mean compromising on merit. No position—whether academic or professional—should be granted simply because of the category someone belongs to. Talent, knowledge, and capability should be the primary criteria. If seats are reserved for specific groups, then selection should still ensure that only deserving and capable candidates are chosen from within those groups. When cut-offs are reduced too much, less qualified individuals sometimes secure opportunities while more capable candidates are left behind.
This becomes especially painful for those who work hard for years, prepare sincerely, and still fail to make it because they do not belong to a reserved category. They compete in open categories with higher cut-offs, stricter age limits, and fewer seats. Meanwhile, someone with lower marks may enter the same institution or role simply because of relaxed criteria. This imbalance raises an important concern: how can a nation progress if merit is consistently compromised?
Such a system unintentionally creates frustration and division in society. Instead of reducing inequality, it often deepens resentment between groups. Equality cannot be built by favoring one group indefinitely while ignoring individual circumstances. India proudly calls itself an equal nation where everyone has the same rights, but at the ground level, equality often feels conditional and selective.
One of the biggest flaws in the current reservation structure is that financial weakness is not treated as the primary factor. A person from a general category who is financially struggling may receive little to no support, while someone from a reserved category with better financial stability continues to benefit from multiple advantages. The system assumes that backwardness is permanent and inherited, rather than situational and economic. This approach ignores the reality that poverty and struggle exist across all castes and communities.
If true equality is the goal, then there should be a single, fair parameter applied to everyone. Support should be based on economic condition, access to education, and genuine disadvantage—not solely on caste or religion.
Not every backward-category individual needs reservation, and not every general-category individual is privileged.
Treating people as individuals rather than labels is the only way forward.
An equal nation cannot be built on unequal rules. Reservation should evolve with time, reflect present realities, and focus on empowering talent rather than replacing it. Only then can equality move beyond words and become a lived experience for everyone.
