Should intern be paid by the companies they are interning at ?
This is really a big question before I respond , let’s talk about who is an intern?
An intern is a student who has gotten to a higher level in his / her profession/ field or career and is being asked by his institution or school to go to a working firm (schools hospitals law firms etc ) to work in-order to gain practical knowledge and experience.
my response to this question is YES intern should be paid by companies they are interning at .
IT’s wouldn’t be fair for you to work for or with someone and at the end of the day,weeks and months nothing was given to you for your services
As it is said a worker deserves his wages
Paying them can actually serve as a means of encouragement
Though they are gaining practical experience knowledge in their field but they rendering their services and skills they are giving their time
During my first clinical posting / training
I was posted to a federal hospital to intern for 2 month
For these month I was paid nothing ( I don’t know about other people or hospitals but as a nursing student from a college of nursing we were paid nothing) I do not know if other intern were paid form some universities
During my internship we were grouped and shared into different wards at the end of two weeks we move to another ward , during this posting our working hours were shared into shifts (morning , afternoon and night shift) this is not all , we still work on weekends . We are just students nurses we are not being paid and we are asked to do all this weather we like it or not there’s no excuse if we miss work for a day you will be punished by my school.
There are times where you might not have money for transportation or for other things that you might need you are on your own if your parents and sponsor do not provide for you and where you give your time and skills will not give you a dime .
And because of these some students don’t go to work throughout their posting /internship giving excuses that do not have money to pay for their transportation fee.
Not paying us made most of us to be nonchalant about work
They don’t care about work
They felt like , the staff nurses should do everything by themselves since at the end of the month they will be paid . While some of us do our irrespective of being paid or not because we want to gain the knowledge and experience
Let assume that we were being paid, or they offered to sponsor our transportation we would been happy working because our little effort are appreciated paying us will motivate us and encourage to do better
My answers still remains that intern nurses should be paid by the companies they are interning at .
