In the world of social media, communicating through text alone can sometimes feel insufficient and to be honest, it can also be boring 🥱. That's where stickers, emojis, and GIFs come in. These digital expressions of emotion have become increasingly popular, with millions of them being shared every day. Emojis are small digital images that represent a wide range of emotions, objects, and actions.
Emojis have become so popular in social media because they provide a quick and easy way to express emotion. They are especially useful for those who are not comfortable expressing themselves through text alone or who want to add a bit of levity to a conversation, like yours faithfully 😉. I'm an emoji freak and I always use them in my online conversations except in formal situations.
The above picture shows my recent emojis and also my favorites, especially the first four. They are my most used emojis, especially the ROFL or rolling on floor laughing emoji 🤣. I know some people don't know that each of those emojis has its individual name. I just mentioned one now and we also have smiling emoji 😊, wink emoji 😉, hugging emoji 🤗, and a lot more.
I started using emojis right when I began chatting on the Internet, so over the years, I have become very good at using them and can't do without them, especially in a casual chat. I mostly use them because they can help on defusing a text that might seem risky without the use of the right emoji. There's a difference between "you're really a crazy person" and "you're really a crazy person 😂"
The first one might be misinterpreted as an aggressive text even though the sender was just joking but by adding that laughing emoji, the receiver will know the sender was just goofing around. But after a few years of chatting on WhatsApp with the use of emojis (and sometimes GIFs), something better came on board; stickers! 🥳. Stickers are also digital images that can be used to express a wide range of emotions, sentiments, and reactions.
They can be funny, cute, or even sarcastic, and they are usually much larger than emojis, which allows for more detail. Before stickers were introduced to Whatsapp, I usually make use of GIFs as a visual aid for things I know can't be portrayed properly with just emojis but when stickers were added to Whatsapp, I switched completely to using them for places where emojis are just not enough.
I currently have hundreds of stickers and I even make some of my own (both static and animated). The first sticker in the above picture is one of my creations, as well as some of the others. Stickers aren't widely accepted like emojis and that's why I don't use them for everyone because some people don't really react well to them. I usually try to ascertain if a person will appreciate stickers before I send to them.
As for Graphics Interchange Format or GIF, they are short, looping animations that can be used to express a wide range of emotions and reactions. They are often humorous or lighthearted and can be used to add a bit of fun to a conversation. I used to use them on WhatsApp before the introduction of stickers but the problem with them is that a person needs to click on them before they play and sometimes, some people don't click them. That's different from stickers because they play automatically without waiting for someone to click them, so that's why I no longer use GIFs.
One potential downside of stickers, emojis, and GIFs is that they can sometimes be misinterpreted. Since they are not actual words, they can be open to interpretation and may not convey the intended message, so it's best to use them carefully but for some of us, we have had years of experience using them 😉. Additionally, relying too heavily on stickers, emojis, and GIFs may detract from the substance of a conversation and prevent deeper communication.
Despite these potential drawbacks, it is clear that stickers, emojis, and GIFs have become an important part of digital communication in social media. They allow users to express themselves in new and creative ways, and they provide a way to add a bit of personality and fun to conversations. As social media continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these digital expressions of emotion continue to shape the way we communicate online. cheers 🥂
