Before I start, I will like to establish the fact that too much of everything is bad and there are always consequences when things are done without restriction. But first, can there be a scenario where freedom becomes too much? To answer that question, let's first look at the meaning of freedom.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, freedom is the condition or right of being able or allowed to do, say, think, etc. whatever you want to, without being controlled or limited. Going by that definition, you will realize that what we have in the world today is not total freedom because even when we have freedom and rights to a lot of things, they are still some things we are restricted from doing or saying.
So, back to the initial question; can we have too much freedom? Yes, too much freedom basically means there are minimal or no regulations, restrictions, or limitations imposed on everyone and we are all free to do whatever we want. Just thinking about it will let you know that there are going to be a lot of consequences if that were to happen and I don't even see any benefits to having too much freedom because humans are going to abuse that opportunity.
One of the consequences that immediately comes to mind is chaos and anarchy. What's stopping a lot of people from being chaotic and downright evil is not because they want to but because there are laws in place restricting them from doing so. Now, imagine if those laws were to be removed, what do you think will happen? Everywhere will basically become a battlefield because people will resort to all kinds of atrocities and some will even do them just for the fun of it.
I'm not even just making up these things in my head because I have seen it happen in a movie called the purge which I watched some years ago. The Purge is a movie where an event called the "purge" takes place every year and during this event (which happens at night), all crimes including murder become legal for 12 hours. That's basically what too much freedom is; everyone can do whatever they like without restrictions and it was absolutely chaos.
When something like that happens, people who already have a lot of power and resources will be untouchable because they can easily do whatever they like and get away with it, the same cannot be said for the average man who even though he has the opportunity to do whatever he likes without restrictions will however not be able to do so all the time especially if there's someone more powerful nearby.
This will lead to more gap between the rich and the poor. I actually feel that more people will become poor because the rich will seize the opportunity to become richer at the expense of everyone else and there's nothing anyone can do about it because of freedom without restrictions. Society will break down from the effects too much freedom will cause because what is still keeping things together is the few laws that most people still adhere to.
Imagine waking up one morning and you look outside your window to see someone getting butchered in the street while people just walk by. Then you look further and you see someone getting robbed and everyone is simply just going about their business. A few minutes later, a terrible accident occurs because nobody is obeying the traffic light. Opposite your house, someone has opened a school for fraudsters and next to it is a human trafficking ring with a signboard in the front clearly advertising their business.
I don't want to even think about living in a world like that, a world where you are totally free and at the same time not free because you are always looking behind your shoulder when walking down the street, is that even freedom? Unless you're among the richest men on earth who can afford to acquire sophisticated security and even live in an underground bunker with state-of-the-art facilities, you're going to find it hard to live in such a world.
