The fundamental purpose of healthcare is to preserve human life; a measure of human life, rather than how many resources one can afford, yet numerous hospitals across the globe are denying individuals treatment, surgery and even life-saving emergencies, because of the lack of funds. Is the cost of saving a life something one should be willing to pay? Doctors pledge to save human life and base their profession on compassion, duty and service. Today, however, the world of healthcare is not built on these values.
Hospitals require sophisticated equipment, medication and specialists in order to be functional, however if the needs of business out-weigh the needs of human life, many suffering are not treated. Whether one survives should never be determined by the size of his wallet.
Countless families feel heartache due to medical costs, some sell homes and incur astronomical debt in order to cover the bills, whilst others will lose a loved one because treatment could not be received at the right time or at all.
The reality is, the wealthy can instantly get the medical attention they need, whereas many cannot. The reason? Because of a world based on business. Medical care is a thing of compassion and not a service driven by wealth; the world should unite in order to overcome illness.
There are many possible solutions to this problem. Governments can improve public health care programs so treatments can be provided at low or no costs.
Hospitals can implement schemes or charity funds which support people in need, or allow for more flexible payment plans for those with less money. Wealthier establishments and individuals can also support others in paying for treatment.
Above all else, medical practitioners and administration must recognize their responsibility to society.
While there is the requirement for funding in hospitals, business should never out-weigh the basic necessity of health care. A society is measured on how it treats its less fortunate and most vulnerable; it will only further deteriorate if people's lives become secondary to profit.
The preservation of a human life is far more valuable than the profit made, and always should be.
