In this century, we will say that “this century makes us free” , “we have our liberty, we have human right”, “we are civilized, educated and more innovative”, “oh, let us not talk about technology, because it is so superb”. All this things are very true, civilization is lit.
But, let us come to think of our forefathers, prolly 20th century; The era of our grandfather’s, where technology has no say in it. What is it that we can say about them ? Did they live a life of regret and pain?
We have heard this saying a lot “everything has its own disadvantages and also its advantages”. I can boldly say that this generation has its own disadvantages, so is the former.
I will say that our grandfathers were happy with the way they lived.. Though life then was hard because most things they do was manually. I feel like life then was easy, there was nothing much to worry about (prolly just food and family), there was this kind of free mind and happiness.
There was less competition, I feel like most people was contended with what they had.. Though, they was not much job opportunities, because it was mostly just farmers, craftsman, hunters e.t.c. Our grandfather’s just secure their daily food and they were good to go.
My sis and I was discussing my dad about a week ago, he was telling us about the olden days (without knowing it will be our weekly contest). He said “people were so relaxing and they don’t have much to worry about”
His dad (my grandfather) was an hunter, most hunters are usually farmer. He said they might just pluck fruit, food and eat even with the dirt and all. It sounds so ‘eww’ to me because the hygiene was poor. They rarely fall sick though and even if they do, there is herbal medicine to cure them.
We still use some of the herbal medicine and concoction, here in Nigeria. Some even works faster and efficiently than the synthetic drugs.
He even said people display goods like yam put a price on it and anyone passing by can just take the yam and put the money there even with the owner’s absence. I was like Really?
BUT, civilization brought us right and justice which I am really grateful for. Slave trade was common then, and it is really a bad thing. But this era, we have our right… even the female have their right (we can’t be force into marriages with people, kings and elderly ones)
Like I have said our forefathers were contended, their ability and knowledge were limited.. they were wasted talent and knowledge. Our forefathers was limited with their native communities and families. So, most of them was not seeking for a development.
Technology has brought us here, where there is a lot of job opportunities, easier lifestyle, easier communication, easier transportation. Civilization has brought us freedom, more creativity, more knowledge. Children have access to education and knowledge, access to establish their talent.
Our forefathers would have love to have an easier lifestyle and less struggles labour . Farming was not an easier thing for them, they farm with smaller objects like cutlass, axe or hoes.. but agriculture has become more beautiful in this generation where we have tractors, plough, cultivator, sprayer and even harrow. What more can we ask for?
What is then wrong in this generation?
The rate of suicide and death is rapidly increasing, (you will prolly say, people also died then) people mostly die because of war or due to natural causes. But this generation, everyone is pursuing one or two things, the stress and strive.
Some get affected by overthinking, depression, hypertension, social media addiction, drugs and overdose.... The competition in this era really do not give most people rest.
In this generation, we try to solve problems while creating another problem. We are so creative though and never satisfied, every single day we create one or two things. But let us not fool ourselves. They are many diseases and virus that are caused by manmade.
The air is polluted, the waters are polluted and even the lands. Smokes and exhaust from different machines, industries and places pollute the air. (Last time I went to my home town, the air was different from the city’s, it was so fresh and I was like ‘wow’). Even the water bodies are polluted.
This generation is lit, there is a lot of things one can do. Everyday we are improving with the hope of a better world. I love that we have a growing mindset, we are not like our forefathers who were willing not to develop.
We have a lot of gadgets, technology and even entertainment ( our forefathers also have their own entertainment, festival and CULTURE).
You should know that AFRICAN is a land of culture and entertainment, I love some of our culture and entertainment, some are still active till date. I hope we maintain them though.
P.S: I am glad to be in this generation, I love the fact that we are full of knowledge.. and I love this generation more because of our rights.
