Parenting is not an easy task and children are not making it any easier. They are many things that our parents do just to keep us from trouble and most of them are lies, some don’t even keep us from trouble they are just so unnecessary.
It is so nice to have a trip down memory lane. It is hard for me to remember all the lies that I and my siblings have been told, but I did well in remembering a few. Children have really been lied to for the better tho, so I am going to segment the ones which are for the better and the ones which are funny and unnecessary. I will be sharing the one that stupidly affected me too.
The ones to keep us from trouble.
OJUJU CALABAR: Hehe, this is a big lie and I fell for it big time, honestly, I just feel so embarrassed right now because it is so funny. We are usually told that Ojuju Calabar which is a masquerade will catch us if we don’t do what is right and this in particular usually sends fear down my spine.
IF YOU SWALLOW A FRUIT SEED, IT WILL GROW IN YOUR STOMACH.
I fell for this too, anytime I mistakenly swallow any seed, I cry so much and hope the fruit doesn’t grow in my stomach.. oh my God, I was so dumb.. hehe.
IF YOU WHISTLE AT NIGHT, SNAKE WILL COME FOR YOU.
Now, this is just to keep us quiet at night, basically, this is a big lie because will a snake appear inside your house? Back then we had this whistle that was always in some snacks and we never really get tired, we just whistle all day long.
The funny and unnecessary ones
IF THE SUN IS SHINING AND RAIN IS FALLING, LION IS GIVING BIRTH
This is a very hilarious lie that I fell for, I usually believe this until I was of age. How does the weather affect lion birth? How? How? It is a very big lie.
IF YOU DRINK COCONUT WATER OR EAT THE EYE OF A FISH, YOU WILL BE DULL (AN OLODO)
I readily got over this lie, or maybe I didn’t, maybe I just loved coconut water and fish eyes because I kept drinking and eating them even after they tell me that I’ll be dull, hehe.
IF YOU LOOK IN THE MIRROR AT NIGHT, YOU WILL SEE SPIRIT OR WITCH.
This one got me big time, I would not dare look into a mirror at night, I would feel so afraid, this lie got me for a long time, even when I was a little grown up, I still feel scared to look into the mirror at night.
Now, this is one I fell so hard for it. I can’t remember who told me this but it was like a general knowledge known. Normally, I got rid of all the lies above quite easily unlike this.
To be honest, I was literally a nightmirrorphobia until I was about 15 or so. Even though I knew it was a big lie that no witch was going to appear through the mirror, I couldn’t find the courage to stare into the mirror at night.
Movies also triggered my fear, because most movies also show similar scenes. I knew our house was not haunted but I still couldn’t, at times I used a cloth to cover the mirror. From age 13 to 14, I started building up the courage to stare at the mirror.
So, at age 15 or so, I could stare at a mirror with a little fear but right now, I can look in the mirror with no fear at all. I do my face routine at night using a mirror, I look at myself every night and I appreciate my beauty.
I still can't believe how hard I fell for that lie, and how long it took to get over it. I looked back and I see how stupid I was..
If you have ever fallen for some of these lies, you can also share your experience.
