So, as corp members, we are mandated to belong to a CDS group. And in a norms I think you should belong to anyone you wish or one you registered with while in camp. Well, on getting to where I am being posted to, it wasn't what I thought. The place is less of a town and there are different things that didn't want me to stay, but at the end of the day, I had to.
Now, on resuming, our boss who is in charge of the corp members in that community, we call him LGI. He just shared us all randomly to the different CDS groups available, he didn't care if it's what you want or registered for. The president of my own CDS group was removed that day due to some things and he immediately replaced him with me.
I've been the coordinator for few months already, about four months now, and most of what we do is to go about keeping the surroundings clean every Thursday, pick random locations to meet. In as much as that is good too, I came up with something else, and that is to start going to schools and reach out to students, sensitizing them on personal hygiene, puberty stage and a whole lot more.
I told my LGI about it, and he agreed, I as well informed my team members and most of them agreed to it. Because I can't do it alone.
The first three images in the begining of this writeup were from the first school we visited earlier this year. And our focus is mainly on the females. We told them about certain hygiene practices the importance of staying clean and all, the program was mainly on menstruation, how to calculate their cycle, what to expect, how to care for themselves and all. We did well together with the help of my team members by getting and distributing sanitary pads to them.
So, just last week, we had another. This recent one took place at GBADAMOSI MEMORIAL SCHOOL. And as the coordinator I'm proud of what we are doing and how far we are going in supporting this young ones. And to be honest, it meant a whole lot to me. The focus was the same as well, helping young girls to understand the change in their body and proper hygiene(menstrual hygiene). Mind you, we didn't go there and talk like teachers, no, we interacted with them, allow them ask questions freely and all. Though some of them were shy at first, but as the different speakers speak and talk to them the confidence in them rose up and they opened up to us on things they were afraid to say/ask. It was a success and at the end, we distributed sanitary pads as well.
We are doing this because I find out that a lot of our young ones, especially the girls lack proper and adequate information about the change in their bodies and best way to care for themselves. Some only rely on what they hear from their friends or what they hear those older than them say in their environment, and we are set to change that. We want them to be confident, knowledgeable and understand their body and the changes that come with it.
We've done twice now, and as the coordinator I can say that it's been amazing, and I will like to add that we are not stopping yet. I have agreed with my team members to carry out this awareness program once every month. We will keep the focus on schools, visiting different ones and doing the little we can.
I will like to add that the plan for the next one is set too, but this next one won't be focused only on the females, we are going for both genders, and with the help of my team members, I am certain that we will give our best and also be able to share things like we've always did. Something that can be used by both genders(soap, toothpaste, toothbrush.......).
