Talking about grading systems, I want to believe we are talking about grading students with the likes of A, B, C, D, E, F. And that we should stop doing that an just grade them with either a pass or a fail... So simple right. But in my own opinion see it as something that won't help this students, even though it might ease work on the teachers to an extent.
First off, such grading systems that is in place makes students to see and know their standings. If you have a student who has the likes of A and B in his/her report card would definitely know he/she is doing very well. Someone with C will know they are an average student and the likes of D will know they are barely scaling through. Not to talk of E and F which means very low amd failure respectively.
Also, it is important that for me to add that this is coming from a teacher's point of view. I work in an academic setting and to some extent I understand these things. Grades like I said earlier helps students know where they stand and how much they should improve. But when we start having either a pass of fail as a grading system than we've failed. We say D means pass, like a weak one. Now imagine when a student has D's in all of his/her subjects, at the end of the day since it's all D's, we write pass on the report card. Such student will think and even believe they did well, since someone who got A's will get a pass on their report cards too. Or, how will such a student with all D know that his or her pass report was a weak one.
So, student will just relent and won't even bother about improving. I doubt their will even be any room for some healthy competition anymore. And like I said earlier, I work in an academic setting and I've seen students ask questions and willing to improve when they see there grades and what it actually implies, a D will make them know that they need to improve, an E will speak loudly to their head, a C will let them know they shouldn't settle for average....
So, going for a pass or fail method of assessment will only hide the performance issues of students and make it hard for them to know if they need help/to improve. So, it's just best to allow students see what level they are in and how best and how well they should improve.
Also, a student who's doing very well in subjects like maths, physics and chemistry but not doing well in economics, health education and the likes might not know of their lapses if at the end of the day the high marks they get in those subjects they are doing well with covers up for the ones they are doing bad in. I hope you get that. Scoring 40 or 38 in economics and the likes while scoring 75 or 80+ in mathematics and all, at the end of the day, if calculated they might get above average mark because the higher marks has covered up for the low ones, and on the report card, they will get a pass. That's why the grading system is good, they will know which subject to put in more effort and improve on.
