Huhm, Nigeria my country. So deep that I don't even know where to start from. But in all honesty, it feels like there's really nothing good happening, like... Fr. And it's disheartening, saddening, frustrating and heartbreaking. Because even in the news, it's always something bad or a bad news, happenings and occurrences. But then, thinking deeply about it, there are few things happening that at least gives me hope that things will change and get better with time.
One of which is the fact that Nigerians are now waking up, especially the youth, we are now being more intentional and no longer allow to be manipulated or swayed. We've now stopped being sentimental or biased. Recently I have noticed that we no longer jump on trends, news, happenings and all, rather we take our time to think it through, to analyze it and then drop out 2cent. Also, the youths have refused to be pushed to a side or be silenced, a lot of us are now making use of our platforms to speak up for a change. Take the electoral reform for instance... Very good to see how the youths are not backing down but are rather speaking up, and protesting peacefully that our elections be free, fair and transparent. It shows that we've begin to think and that we know what we want. Also, I'm happy to see how a lot of people are speaking up that the government should become more transparent and accountable.
And the bad, this is something that's so heavy on my heart. And believe me, words won't be enough to comprehend it. Even still, it's not something we can ignore, we need to speak up. And it is the rate of insecurity in the country, as Nigeria is presently, no where, absolutely no where is save presently. The rate at which kidnappers and bandits operates is alarming. It's not even to write about it. Because can you imagine a country where bandits kill uniform officers, calls for meetings and warned the officers to not come dressed in their uniforms, then they(the bandits) showed up at the meeting dressed in the uniform of those officers they killed. How does it sound, yet the government can do nothing about it.
A lot of families are in deep sorrows as I write because either they've lost their loved ones to the hands of these bandits or because the kidnappers are asking for huge amount of money they know they can't get from anywhere. And in all of this, the governors, ministers and even the presidents keeps traveling up and down as if nothing is going on in their country. Just last week or earlier this week, some people were kidnapped in my state (Kwara State, Nigeria), the government talked about it and said the kidnapped people were only about 30, immediately, the bandits/kidnappers came online (live) and showed the whole world that the government are lying, they showed the number of people they actually kidnapped which was over 100.
The country is unsafe at the moment, and it's terrifying. It's more terrifying seeing the rate at which some even feel unconcerned. They just kept mute as if it's nothing. But what can we say....it is well.
The way forward is that we become courageous and take actions. Like I said earlier, nobody is safe at the moment, because we never know what's lurking behind us where we feel we are safe. Those that it happened too never expected it as well. So, it's time we take action as Nigerians and call out the government to take responsibility and do better. We should mount pressure on the government for them to protect the lives and properties of their citizens as that is their number one assignment.
We often say change will/can not happen overnight, but to me I believe that's in the past, or that it depends. If we push hard and mount pressure the way we should by not keeping quite and coming all out to demand our right, change will show up. Which means we need to unite, have one voice and make sure that the good things outweigh the bad.
Nigeria is not hopeless, we believe all will be well, even though it does not look like it, considering the challenges we are facing. Still, I hope for a day when we will all really live in peace and harmony.
