Well, I just hope I won't sound somehow with this topic as it is a very sensitive one. More sensitive because life is involved, as it is talking about being denied treatment all because those involved or the patient cannot pay at the moment.
Now, I believe that when it concerns humans, health issues, and hospitals, the most important is to find a way to save the person's life no matter what. And I'm not so sure about the oath doctors take, but I won't deny that I've heard about it. And for this prompt to make mention of it, then I believe its true that they actually take oaths, which is to preserve and save lives.
I've always preached and stood by a certain thing, which is... Humanity before anything. Yes, humanity before religion, humanity before tribe, and now... humanity before money.
But with all of that, we as well need to understand the situations of the hospitals and health facilities. I know of a particular hospital some years ago when I had to go run a test, I heard how they've helped certain patients, they even hammered on a certain one they ran a test for, they even helped send a sample of something to another state just so the person could get the result and use it for what they need it for since their own facility can't conduct such a test. At the end, the people they helped disappeared.
Now, that particular hospital mentioned three different patients that has done such for them, and they mentioned those three because the money involved was much, what of those that would have ran away with little money too. Which account should such a hospital record that loss, also if they keep doing that and each patient keeps doing the same, how long will such a hospital last.
Hospitals need money too, they pay for electricity, buy fuel, buy injections, drugs, canulars, water, syringes and all.... This reminds me of when I was admitted in a hospital, it will be important to add that this hospital is government owned. Yes, it is a general hospital. A popular one at that. What happened was that I was scheduled for an operation alongside another child. We paid for the operation, anesthesia and everything we were asked too. But they kept postponing the day of the surgery.
After a lot of pressure from my parent and the parent of this other child, those in charge later spit out a very disgusting truth... Guess what, a whole government hospital lacks water, fuel and oxygen. And they can't depend on electricity because anything can happen at anytime. And because our lives were at risk and we were in pain, my parents and the parent of this other child contributed money for a government hospital to get water and fuel. That particular experience made me see the reality of things and how difficult it can be for hospitals as well.
So, I don't think this doctor's and hospitals are being heartless for demanding for money first. Some really want to help but they actually don't have the needed pills or injections at that time, and they need you to pay or deposit a certain amount so they can get the needed treatment materials. And they wouldn't even tell you that, which hospital will open up to you that way....
But then, I'm not saying they should turn patient down and deny them treatment. I believe all or most hospitals will have certain things in stock that they can use to start treatment. There some emergency equipment, pills and injections that almost every hospital cannot but have, they can start with that and begin treatment on the patient. Also, if they have what's actually needed to take proper care of such a patient, then they should go ahead with it, especially if it is an emergency. Later, they can tell families to make sure they pay and even sign undertakings.
Also, there's the need for government to pay attention to the health sector. I heard of the amount that was budgeted for a whole state healthcare system in a year, and I was speechless, it was just too small. Hospitals shouldn't lack water, fuel, oxygen, drugs, injections and such. Also, I think there should be some amount set aside for patients who in all honesty cannot afford treatment... something like an emergency support fund.
Humanity before any other thing... We shouldn't just watch as a fellow human wriggle in pain and refuse to do anything just because they couldn't afford treatment yet. Life is precious, and I'm sure there's nothing interesting in watching a fellow human die just because they can't pay for a treatment that's even yet to be carried out.
