In my secondary school days back in 2015, during my time in SS2, I had a significant realization that not all that glisters is gold. Coming from a privileged background, we didn't have much but we weren't begging. I often found myself yearning for the kind of life I saw portrayed in movies or sometimes, on my way to board a public transport, when I see kids like me riding to school in exotic cars. That year, a new student named Nelly joined our class, the car she comes to school in speaks of affluence and luxury. The expensive car and her stories of extravagant trips made her the center of attention, and everyone admired her and the wealth.
Nelly's presence influenced my mindset, causing me to become dissatisfied with the small amounts of money and snacks I'm being given. I became angry when given only N200 for transportation and snacks. Although my behavior changed noticeably, everyone assumed it was just a part of growing up.
Nelly's habit of purchasing the most expensive items in the canteen fueled my change of behavior. We blindly followed her even when there were no tangible benefits, but we do have a great break time some days when she chooses to make us happy and asks home to pick something. Nelly's extravagant life captivated us, and we were eager to be associated with her. It was as if she was born into a life of wealth, and we wanted to share in that illusion.
Curiously, Nelly's lavish lifestyle was paired with an air of weakness. Her struggles with academics were apparent, particularly in math and English. One day, I suggested she get a math teacher to help improve her grades, only to be replied with a dismissive response about teachers being gold diggers and ineffective.
However, the fake life of Nelly began to crack when her "mom" visited the school and confronted the principal. The truth was revealed - Nelly wasn't the rich heiress we believed her to be. In fact, she worked as a maid for the family, and her so-called mother was her employer. The money she spent was actually stolen money from her Madam's shop.
Furthermore, Nelly's secret relationship with a boy named Kenneth came to light. What we thought was a just a normal secondary romance like everyone had his or her secret admirer all in the dark turned out to be an exploitative situation. Kenneth had manipulated Nelly, taking advantage of her feelings and her family's supposed wealth.
The incident led to Nelly's expulsion from school, along with Kenneth. My friends and I, who were aware of the truth but kept silent, were also punished. This entire experience served as a lesson for me. I realized that appearances can be deceiving, and one should never blindly wish to be like someone without understanding the reality behind the appearance.
From then on, I stopped comparing myself to others and yearning for their lives. The lesson I learned was that not everything that glitters is truly gold and understanding this early can save us from unnecessary trouble and disappointment. This experience changed my perspective, helping me appreciate my own life and aspirations instead of constantly being swayed by others' appearances.
