My country in Nigeria the minimum wage is very low compared to the economy of the country. Within my own knowledge, I expect that minimum wage should be the average amount of money, between the poor and the Wealthy. However in my country, the expected or approved minimum wage remains an amount that even the poor can get and still remains Poor. When you consider the cause of living in the country I believe that is when a minimum wage should be strike. When a particular source of living out of other resources needed in life to succeed can cause more than a minimum wage isn't enough.
The minimum wage approved in Nigeria my country and where I also reside is 70,000 naira. 70,000 naira I don't know what an average Nigerian youth can afford that could last him for a week. Let's take for example, when you are been paid 70,000 naira as a minimum wage in a month, what can you afford without amount of money that will last you till the next month salary. Realize that you can barely feel with what the country you as minimum wage as a civil servant or a government worker. Remember that not every citizen of a country receive this minimum wage of payment.
The price of fuel, is currently 1,600 naira from the filling station. Let's take for example that at least you spend 1,600 naira in fuel consumption daily, to get your workplace and other things activities. At the end of the month you are spending approximately 48,000 naira, in 1 month, just from fuel. Out of the 70,000 naira minimum wage that was paid we have spent 48,000 naira and you are left with just 22,000. We know that the remaining amount cannot just lead to feed for the remaining one month. How about shelter and clothing. Because these one of the basic need of every human.
After Due consideration you will realize that the minimum wage paid in my country is like a peanuts into Citizens who are government workers pockets.
What if you double? Or even triple the minimum wage? If eventually the double it will be 140,000 naira in a month and if the triple it will be resulting at 210,000 naira in a month.
Only if Nigeria can realize that the actual problem is the economy and not the minimum wage. If we are at a point where, the economy is suiting well and have a balance with the minimum wage being paid you will realize that nobody will care much about if the minimum wage paid is small or much, why because it is in corresponding with the economy.
If I am being paid 300,000 naira as minimum wage and I spent 250,000 naira just in basic living needs, you will still agree with me that, the paid minimum wage is still not enough. Therefore, the main Factor to tackle is economy of a country.
