Just this morning, I watched a YouTube short of a guy advicing his viewers on things not to tell others no matter what. One of the things he listed was "Don't tell anyone how much you earn" and he gave a whole lot of reasons we shouldn't tell. He also added that we should not tell others our next plan because we tend to not do them after.
Back to the prompt, I know the video may not be directly about what the prompt is asking but it definitely reminded me of the video and the reasons he shared about not telling others how much we earn. The prompt is asking from the aspect of knowing who is involved in a crime or not, and I think it's also important to worry about.
But I'll start by sharing why our earnings should be kept as private as possible, from my experience and from the reasons the guy shared in the video. First is, the value you give for that amount of you earn will most likely be seen as nothing. It's from experience too, people won't see how much you work but how much you earn.
Another thing that begins to happen and become a clear pattern is, people would expect you (if you earn more than them) to do most of the payments especially in a fun gathering or outing because they think it's only fair that way, and they become almost insensitive to the fact that you might have responsibilities just like everyone too.
If you're not wise, careful and have clear plans or budget, you'll spend way more when your earnings are revealed to people more than it should be than when it's kept as private as possible. Now, coming to the purpose of finding out who is involved in crimes or not, I think real criminals will still find ways to hide their money.
Maybe a few criminals will be found and the money will be seized to help lives (that's still a wild imagination though) but if such a law is made to catch criminals, I can see how badly it will be on those who have hacked into their mindset to get paid for a value that seem small, given to the economy and the pay is a whole lot.
And I don't see how this will help low salary earners earn more from the same work they had been putting in, but if it will increase their earnings, then it makes sense that earnings should be made public. Knowing my country and how badly salary levels are, I see more people suffering from this move than they being saved.
So I'll say, publishing online for the public to see salaries and earnings, isn't the solution to the problem on ground. Government working on the minimum wages, criminals found out by other means, business owners being less insensitive to the situation of the country to their employees so they pay better, is kinda a much better solution.
