A lot has changed in the past, I must say. We rarely see people that listen to news or even read news papers. If you grew up with some fathers some years ago, there is no way you will not fall in love with news. Because honestly, it is not possible.
In my house and some other of our neighbors, we use news to do a competition, in fact, if you don't want to listen to it. Your parents will drag you to listen to it in one way or another. Every blessed night with my parents, I and all my siblings will be in the sitting room to see the news together. The news was better some years ago. But as time goes on, things start changing.
I could still remember the channel we used to watch on my head.
Anything from 8:30 PM in the night, just hand over the remote control to my parents. Most of our parents back then believed that watching news would add to your cognitive domain positively. Honestly, it does, especially when we are doing current affairs. This was the belief of our parents: watching the news will make you active and know what is going on in the country. We do this every single night. For so many years when I was still young, I remembered we watched the news every night, and the funniest part was there was always electricity supply back then.
But it got to some stage that we reduced watching the news; things changed with the blink of an eye. Nothing like educative to listen to on the television or the radio; they started bringing news about sadness and stupid stuff into our lives. I could still remember how we listened to a particular news story some years ago about how some terrorists bombed mosques and churches. And seeing people on the floor so dead. We couldn't control it; I was afraid, as were my siblings. My parents told us to go to bed.
As time goes on. More bad news starts coming.
You can't sit on the television and hear a single good word. If they did not use someone for rituals today, they will rape someone tomorrow. The news has become so weird that we can't handle it anymore. From there, we gradually reduced the way we listened to the news, both on television and radio.
It was only my parents that listened to it then. And we children started seeing movies, educational ones. It has gotten to a stage where even my parents will join us watching movies together. Because honestly, if you listen to Nigerian sad news, you might be sad forever. You can't have a soft mind and listen to Nigerian news.
On the other hand, I don't believe 50 percent of what they say on the news, and yet I don't bother or find a way to know the truth. I just believe if you want to live long in my country. There are some things you should avoid, and always mind your business if you want to live long. Till this moment now, I have totally stopped listening to the news. The sad news increases every single day.
