Covid- 19 ended years ago and we are all back to our daily lives. Now tell me why 3 years later, we are still paying Covid tax and even a levy for performing transactions from our mobile wallet. It didn’t make sense but if something like this is being passed by the government, you’d just have to live through it and wait till the next elections. But then, Ghanaians couldn’t live through this as it was killing us. We then took to the streets to voice out our concerns but how did it end up? We were being harassed and even arrested and taken to court. Some even spent some time in jail and their only offense was asking for a better Ghana.
Ghanaians saw and when the next elections came, no one told us to vote for the right person instead of voting based on tribe and other things. Fast forward to today, I’d say the country is in a way better state and citizens are living their almost, if not best lives. Fuel prices have reduced , the economy is good and everything is as it should be. The cedi is doing very well in the international market and the government keeps on working on making our country among the top countries people would speak of when they speak of places to visit.
On the outside, things look good. On the inside, it’s all good but there’s always that one thing trying to mess things up and to me, it would have to do with trade in our country. Wholesale prices of good have reduced to the lowest you could think of but guess what? We still buy the groceries we buy on the daily basis at the same prices we used to buy years ago. Market women and traders seem to have refused to reduce their prices even with how good the economy is looking. Food vendors make extra profit because the food they’re selling today is of the same value as that they were selling when things were hard in the country. To me, it’s bad. How can we go forward as a country is the government is doing their best to make the system work while we those who ask for a better system refuse to change.
Personally, I believe the only solution to this issue is the government setting standard prices for everything in the market and anyone who goes against that would have to face the law. This way, local farmers get value for their produce and citizens also get value for their money whole traders also get their profit on whatever was sold. Aside this, I would say our country is doing very great and the future looks very promising for Ghana as a country.
