Our world today cannot do without the internet due to the benefits it offers but in as much as we get the best from using the internet, some have used the internet as a medium to spread fake news and this has in turn caused damage to people's mental health. Fake news is not only spread via the internet, It can also be via gist with friends, chats or calls.
I have encountered a good number of fake news both offline and online, some made me panic while some I just had to figure out that somehow they were fake news and my instincts were right these times😐
I'll be sharing a fake news that I encountered a long time ago when I was in secondary school as a boarder.. Let's call it an offline fake news😅
MY ENCOUNTER
If you were a boarder during your secondary school days you'll be very familiar with the word "inspection". It's a routine for the school management and prefects to inspect each hostel to check their level of cleanliness and orderliness and reward the three best out of all the hostels. This routine normally happens twice in a month and during weekends too.
So during the assembly on one bright Monday morning, our sanitation master announced that there was going to be an inspection that weekend and that all hands should be on deck to keep their corners and hostel environment neat and tidy. Fast forward to Thursday of the same week, we heard rumors that the inspection was not going to hold again that weekend. Infact, our hostel prefect made us believe the rumor was true cus she wasn't serious with coordinating the cleaning and sanitation activities the way she should have on a normal inspection preparation time
We all relaxed.. I'm not saying we were not cleaning up our hostels and all but the way we should have cleaned because of the inspection we were expecting was not so. I mean because we were expecting an inspection, we should have removed the cobwebs on the fan, ceiling, cleaned the windows and even do a little decoration in our room. But we didn't do all that because of the rumor we heard about the inspection.
On the supposed day of the inspection, we heard shouts from outside and while I peeped through the window, we saw the school management and some prefects approaching the female hostel.. It was then it dawned on us that the inspection was never cancelled. It was a big rumor!😶
Unluckily for us, our room was the first in the female hostel, they just stood outside for a while for us to get dressed after which they badged into our room. Of course, a lot of things were not in order in our room because we believed the rumors and never prepared for the inspection.. We were so ashamed of ourselves! 😑
While they scored our room, It was accompanied with one complain or the other till they left our room to the the next hostel.
But luckily for the other hostels, they had a little time to tidy up some things before the inspectors got to their room. And somehow the little time they had to put things in order paid off. As for my hostel, we needed not to wait for the day the result of the inspection would be announced because we knew we had failed in every aspect. And finally, we failed woefully ☹️
This particular fake news encounter was a collective one yea.. But it sure had a great impact on me, it taught me to always confirm anything I hear first before making my decisions..
If only we cleaned up as though we were preparing for an inspection even with the rumors that were flying around, we wouldn't have been taken unawares by the inspectors.
