Sometimes, I watch my kids operate computers and smartphones far better than some adults do, and I keep being in awe of how far we have come in our world today. A lot of answers Google provides in the twinkling of an eye and many more things unfolding in our generation today make me wonder if we are truly living in the best era.
Well, looking back at the history and with what I know now, I think we are living in one of the best eras, although each era has its peculiar challenges.
Reflecting on the many stories Grandma told me about the history, I doubt I would have survived to those time of our ancestors'. I am aware they lived peacefully; they lived a very simple life without pressures like it is now, but they also swam in the ocean of hardship ...something I can't imagine when I hear them.
Imagine travelling a long distance before having access to communication, including vital ones; that's a lot to think about. In this era, we all can comfortably video call our family abroad within seconds. I also learned that some persons died carelessly those days due to strange illnesses that herbs couldn't take care of, but today, the medical care humans need has improved for good.
Even premature babies can still survive in incubators and live their normal lives. A lot of lives are being rescued daily due to improved medical care in this era. I am just imagining how I would have survived the many complications I had during childbirth if I were born in that era of our ancestors. Maybe I could have died? God forbid, lol.
In this era, we are privileged to have different innovations that have brought open doors for both learning and businesses. With the many digital platforms, we advertise our business, and things are just much easier, including making money and living better. I can imagine the hectic stress our ancestors passed through farming just to earn a living, but today the story is different; today we can also use our smartphones to learn digital skills and be okay.
To be sincere, there are a lot of advancements in this era compared to the old, but even at that, I wouldn't say that this era is perfect. I am aware that our generation today is strongly battling with different problems our ancestors didn't face back then. Talk about the social media pressure, pressure to keep up with the current trends, depression, and the like. Even with the advanced world, many people are still exhausted emotionally.
Sometimes, I admire the simple world our ancestors enjoyed those days, the time we can comfortably leave our kids to our neighbors and go to the market; those days we can leave the children outside to play together, and also those evenings kids gather under the moonlight, listening to folktales and sharing laughter together. All these brought a stronger bond among each other, but in this era, the screen has taken over. Even in our evening moments together, we are carried away with our phones; it is what it is.
However, if I am to choose another era, I will still prefer this current one, honestly, regardless of the challenges we see today. I love the advancement and how easier life has become. I also love to see that women now have voices compared to the olden days; with other areas, we have improved drastically.
Overall, each era has its blessings and challenges, but the thing is not to focus on one to live in but rather to choose how to live within the era you find yourself in.
