Some things we do or say in our past never get buried even when we have turned into a new leaf. Growth happens; we may encounter things that could make us change from bad to good, but despite how we strive to remain upright moving forward, our past has a way of resurfacing in a negative way when we don't expect it.
The world we live in today, it's very easy for people to dig up our careless past posts or tweets, opinions, or beliefs, and such a careless post years back can come back to shake us negatively in our current life even when we have changed from who we used to be in the past. Now the question is, should one pay for those things done years ago, especially when they've grown to become better individuals?
To start with, life is never static; personally, I am no longer the person I was 10 years ago. Through life experiences, exposures, and trainings, I have embraced drastic changes in different ways, and I know it's the same for many people. As we keep journeying into this life, we encounter situations that could reshape us, reshape our thoughts and beliefs, and reshape the way we talk and approach things; it happens.
Having said that, I could have spoken words in the past that I no longer stand on today due to changes and growth that have taken place in my life today, and punishing me for my past looks unfair, I must say. Even the creator of the universe encourages the created to change. We preach change here and there, and upon reflection, people realize their mistakes and embrace changes and move on with their lives with a renewed mindset. This is a good development, but digging out the same person's past to be punished doesn't make sense.
Although I am aware that humans should always take responsibility for their actions, I am aware that words can be so harmful no matter how old they are and have to be dismissed, but instead of punishing someone who has stopped an old life, it's fair enough that the person genuinely apologizes for their past and is willing to keep doing better. The joy of every parent is to see their child change from bad character, the same with the joy of every spouse and our society at large.
Positive change should always be encouraged, and on this note, I will say that people should always be intentional with their spoken words or actions, whether online or offline. You never know who you are hurting with your careless words; you never know if your kids will grow to reap the consequences of your careless words you posted online. Just remain intentional with our dealings with others because tomorrow is pregnant.
As long as change is obvious with a sincere apology, there is no need to punish the offender for his past. We must keep learning and unlearning, growing and changing, either for good or bad, but the good changes should be encouraged instead of chaining someone to the old version he has outgrown for good.
