So far, technology has kept evolving, from communication to business to education and so on. Recently, one of the biggest conversations is about the self-driving cars that can move from one distance to another without a human driver on the wheel to control them.
If I should be sincere, the idea of a self-driving car looks fascinating on the outside for me, but deep down, I am just scared, lol.
Before I unleash my fear, let me recognize the good advantages I see from this initiative. You know how drunk, impatient, over-speeding, answering calls while driving, and careless most of our human drivers can be, causing accidents on the road here and there and claiming lives alongside. Maybe with regulated self-driving cars, all these negativities will be reduced, just maybe.
Then again, some people with a phobia of driving cars can also own one without a driver to pay for. Even those with physical disabilities and our elderly parents can take advantage of self-driving cars.
I also saw an accident the other day involving a man who was driving his wife to their home. In the process, the man started having a seizure right there in his car, stirring, and then the car hit a pole accidentally as the man was unconscious and lost control of the steering. People rushed to save the man's life; it was the wife who was inside the car but couldn't drive that explained what really happened to the husband on the steering.
Imagine if a self-driving car were available for this couple; maybe the accident could have been averted.
However, as much as this innovation looks great, I won't overlook the many concerns too. I have never seen a perfect tech product; it usually develops a fault at some point, or perhaps network fluctuations and all of that. What if the self-driving car miscalculates? What if the regulation fails on duty? It's scary to imagine, I must say.
On the other hand, if a preventable accident occurs or perhaps any kind of damage happens with the self-driving car, who pays for that?Personally, I believe the responsibility should not fall on one person alone. The manufacturer designed the car in a way it should function; again, the owner might fail to follow the usage guidelines. This is why I feel that the two parties bear the cost of damage in this regard.
Again, do I support self-driving cars becoming mainstream? I would say yes but obviously not immediately, especially in my country. For an innovation like this, there is a serious need for adequate testing and proper regulation before we will say this tech product can fit in in our environment. We can't copy what other developed and structured countries are doing; we must consider and work on our road before embracing the idea.
Overall, human lives must be placed as the top priority before embracing any new innovation because no innovation comes with only advantages; there are also risks involved, either mild or high.
